Who Is Varang on Avatar 3 Poster? Fire and Ash Villain Explained

The enticing first-look poster for Avatar: Fire and Ash unveils Varang, a fresh character that audiences will be introduced to in the near future. Oona Chaplin, renowned for her portrayal of Talisa Maegyr on Game of Thrones, takes on her first role in Pandora as the new antagonist. To say fans are excited to delve deeper into this character ahead of Avatar 3’s release this year is an understatement.

So, here’s everything we know about Varang in Avatar: Fire and Ash.

Oona Chaplin’s Avatar 3 villain Varang on Fire and Ash Poster explained

In the upcoming chapters of the Avatar franchise, a new antagonist named Varang will be introduced. This character, portrayed by Oona Chaplin, heads up the Ash Clan, one of several fresh tribes that fans will encounter in the forthcoming installments, as reported by ScreenRant.

In contrast to the past Avatar films where only human characters played antagonistic roles, Varang will introduce a new faction that aggressively seeks to conquer Pandora, forcibly taking over its territory and resources.

In this scenario, the Na’vi people became renowned for their heroic actions against the human invaders. Yet, in the story Fire and Ash, the plot may not follow such a simple pattern. Instead, viewers might witness a more complex side of the Na’vi as they are introduced to the Ash Clan and Varang, which could potentially reveal some less than heroic traits among them.

During an interview with Empire, director James Cameron revealed some details about the backstory of the Ash Clan. According to him, their wickedness can be traced back to decades of suffering and injustice they’ve faced.

Varang is the head of a group who’ve faced severe trials. Her experiences have made her resilient,” he asserted. “She’d go to great lengths for them, including acts that might seem unjust or wrong to others,” elaborated Cameron.

Discussing a change in the storyline for the franchise, Cameron expressed, “In this movie, we aimed to move away from straightforward good versus evil. We’re striving to advance past the ‘humans are always villains, Na’vi are always heroes’ stereotype.

The director additionally praised Chaplin’s extraordinary portrayal of the antagonist in Ash. He said, “Although she is an enemy and adversary, Chaplin brings such a sense of reality and life to the character.

Avatar: Fire & Ash is all set to make its theatrical debut on December 19, 2025.
