Who is the creepy horned figure Daemon sees in the House of the Dragon finale?

As a devoted fan with over two decades of immersion in the intricate world of George R.R. Martin, I must say that the revelation of the Green Men in House of the Dragon is nothing short of thrilling! These enigmatic figures have been lurking in the shadows since the days of the First Men and the Children of the Forest, a tantalizing mystery to even the most ardent Westeros enthusiasts.

In the thrilling finale of House of the Dragon’s second season, titled “The Queen Who Ever Was,” I found myself immersed in a mind-bending vision while standing amidst the trees of Harrenhal’s godswood. This isn’t just a simple dream; it was a glimpse into a potential future where the White Walkers conquer the Seven Kingdoms. Moreover, I caught a fleeting image of a young girl who bore an uncanny resemblance to Daenerys Targaryen.

Everything feels eerie, mysterious, and strange from the start, even before he touches the peculiar weirwood tree, which triggers the vision. Prior to this, he encounters an enigmatic figure with horns seemingly lurking in the godswood.

Who is this figure? There’s really one option: it’s one of the Green Men from the Isle of Faces.

Who are the Green Men?

In the realm of ice and fire, numerous groups exist, including maesters, the Night’s Watch, the Kingsguard, the silent sisters, among others. One group that remains shrouded in enigma is the Green Men. They hold little significance within George R.R. Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire” series, and their existence is known primarily to devoted fans who delve deep into the lore.

However, these figures are significant during the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons, a central event in “House of the Dragon” as detailed in George R.R. Martin’s book “Fire & Blood”. Essentially, they represent an order tasked with guarding the Isle of Faces, a small island situated within the Gods Eye lake, not far from Harrenhal where Daemon has resided throughout this season.

The Isle of Faces is a sacred place. Thousands of years ago, it was on this island that representatives of the First Men met with representatives of the Children of the Forest, the race of creatures who occupied Westeros before humans migrated there. The Children and the First Men had been engaged in a bloody war for a while, but by this point both sides were tired of fighting and ready to make peace. There on the Isle of Faces they agreed upon the Pact, under which the First Men would get to occupy all the land in Westeros save the deep forests, which would remain the domain of the Children. The First Men also agreed not to chop down any more trees, which were sacred to the Children. To mark the occasion, faces were carved into all the trees on the island, so that the Gods worshipped by the Children of the Forest could bear witness to the event.

In the passage of “A Song of Ice and Fire”, Old Nan mentions tales about the Green Men who are said to guard this location for millennia. It’s uncertain whether these beings actually have antlers and green skin as described or if they wear antler-like headpieces. Could the Green Men be humans devoted to their cause, or perhaps a mix of humans and the Children of the Forest? Are there surviving Children of the Forest on the Isle of Faces? By the time of “Game of Thrones”, only a few Children remained within Westeros, having moved north of the Wall. If any still existed in the Seven Kingdoms proper, they would be found on the Isle of Faces.

In essence, there remains a mystery about the Green Men, as George R.R. Martin intentionally left certain aspects of their lore unclear. In the book “Fire & Blood”, Addam of Hull is depicted riding his dragon Seasmoke to the Isle of Faces amidst war turmoil for counsel from the Green Men. However, we’re still uncertain about why he went there or what transpired on the island. With the introduction of the Green Men in “House of the Dragon”, it appears that these questions may be addressed in future seasons. (Beware incoming SPOILER!)

It appears that the third season of “House of the Dragon” might not start until the year 2026. The story is expected to conclude with a fourth and final season sometime following that.
