He’s the new Weekend Sunrise host and a rising star at Channel Seven.
But David Woiwod has not always been making headlines for the right reasons.
In the early stages of his career, a 40-year-old news reporter gained widespread attention at the network due to an incorrect pronunciation of Ellen DeGeneres, a prominent figure in Hollywood.
During the 2020 Sunrise segment, I had the pleasure of conducting a live cross from the United States. In the midst of this broadcast, I affectionately referred to the widely acclaimed talk show host as “Allan DeGeneres.

Following a conversation about the coronavirus vaccine, it was disclosed by Woiwood that DeGeneres had received a positive test result for Covid-19.
Earlier today, talk show host Ellen DeGeneres announced that she had tested positive for something. She mentioned she’s currently well but finds herself among numerous Americans who are grappling with the same issue, as stated by him.
2021 saw Woiwod back in the limelight on the Oscars red carpet, where he was overheard having a heated conversation with British acting sensation Daniel Kaluuya.
Seven cameras recorded the awkward incident, with the eager journalist trying to draw notice from the actor known for ‘Get Out.’
Our U.S. network reporter was positioned in the press area when he noticed the 32-year-old, who had been nominated for an Oscar, walking towards the auditorium.
Under strict Covid guidelines, David found himself unable to approach the celebrities closely. Instead, he called out to Kaluuya from a distance of several meters.
Hi there, Daniel! It’s me, your friend from down under, Australia! Hey, Daniel! I was wondering if we could catch up for a moment? Everything okay with you? He started calling out loudly and gesturing wildly with his hand.

Indeed, Woiwod has consistently found himself at the center of significant global news events ever since he joined Seven News as an overseas correspondent in July 2020.
Spectators were taken aback as they watched stunning videos showing a man caught up in an airstrike along the Gaza border in October 2023.
As the head of the 7NEWS US bureau, Woiwood found himself in the midst of a southern Israeli town named Sderot, when suddenly the news broadcast was cut short due to an exchange of rocket fire between Israeli troops and Hamas militants.
When the dangerous situation became uncomfortably near, Woiwod hurried to safety, informing his audience with a warning: “It seems we may need to leave right away, folks. We must depart immediately.
Following the conclusion of the report, viewers’ screens turned dark for a while, but Woiwod reappeared after an hour to provide updated information about the ongoing situation to Australians.
In that harrowing incident, I found myself realizing how delicate the balance is in Israel, demonstrating that the situation is complex and ever-changing.
The scrappy reporter was announced as Matt Doran’s replacement during Sunrise on Thursday.
Breakfast hosts Nat Barr and Matt Shirvington welcomed Woiwod to their team live on-air.
Starting this weekend, the reporter begins a fresh assignment, however, he is not new to morning television on this network, as they have chosen to elevate someone from within their ranks instead.
Woiwood was a Sunrise reporter for four years after first joining Seven in 2016.
In July 2020, he chose to depart from the program following his appointment as the network’s U.S. correspondent stationed in Los Angeles.
Renowned for his witty conversations, Woiwood has also delved into significant events over the past four years, such as the U.S. presidential election and the attempt on Donald Trump’s life.
Additionally, he covered incidents such as the devastating school shootings in Texas and Tennessee, as well as domestic catastrophes like hurricanes, wildfires, and floods that caused destruction across various U.S. states.
Some significant incidents reported by Woiwod were the tragic Titan Submersible mishap and the solemn funeral of Queen Elizabeth II.

Following Matt Doran’s heartfelt, live declaration a few weeks back on wrapping up his five-year stint at Weekend Sunrise, he shared his intention to dedicate more time to his family and explore new ventures.
