Who dies in Outer Banks season 4: A breakdown of every key death in OBX season 4
As a die-hard fan of the Pogues’ thrilling adventures, I’ve got to say that this season has been nothing short of heart-wrenching and action-packed! The departure of Lightner, Dalia’s right-hand man, was certainly unexpected but oh-so-dramatic! Who would have thought it’d be Pope who took him down in self-defense? Talk about a twist!
You can now watch the entirety of “Outer Banks” season 4 on Netflix, after the last five episodes of the season were made available on November 7. This new season brought significant shifts for the Pogues, but as the saying goes, change may be constant, yet familiarity endures.
As a gamer immersed in our latest adventure, we, the Pogues, were basking in the triumphant afterglow of our season 3 victory, unearthing the fabled city of El Dorado and pocketing more than a million gold nuggets. But just like that, our elation vanished as swiftly as the riches dwindled. Once more, we were ensnared in a treasure hunt, this time facing fresh hurdles and hidden dangers lurking at every turn.
It’s clear as day that treasure hunting can be perilous and it seems to bring out the darkest aspects in individuals, something we’ve unfortunately discovered throughout the series. In less than four seasons, numerous characters have lost their lives while chasing treasures, with season 4 witnessing a spike in fatalities marked by several startling deaths, including one of the most significant character demises to date.
With the entirety of Outer Banks Season 4 now available for viewing, let’s briefly revisit the main characters who met their end throughout this season.
Needless to say, there are major spoilers for both part 1 and part 2 of Outer Banks season 4 ahead so read at your own risk!
Wes Genrette was season 4’s first major death
As a dedicated gamer diving into Outer Banks’ fourth season, I was surprised to witness the first major demise: the enigmatic figure introduced at the end of season 3, Wes Genrette, who sought the Pogues’ assistance in unearthing Blackbeard’s treasure. Intriguingly, Wes is a wealthy gentleman who suspects his family has been plagued by a Blackbeard curse, resulting in the untimely deaths of several relatives, including his own daughter.
Wes enlists the aid of the Pogues to locate an old amulet once belonging to Blackbeard, said to be on his final vessel. The amulet is rumored to lift a curse. Wes proposes to pay the team with some money for their assistance, which they agree to.
The Pogues, in their endeavor, successfully find and secure the amulet. However, when they go to claim their reward from Wes, they discover that he has died under suspicious circumstances. Initially, it was claimed his death was natural, but eventually, we uncover that Wes was murdered by Groff, who coveted the family estate and aimed to seize Blackbeard’s treasure as part of a larger scheme, passing it off as his own.
Terrance died saving Cleo
In the heat of Part 1, I found myself witnessing another pivotal demise this gaming season – Terrance sacrificed himself valiantly to shield Cleo.
At the start of the campaign, it becomes clear that Terrence is collaborating with the mercenaries who are on the hunt for Blackbeard’s amulet. Initially, it appears that he can no longer be relied upon. However, when Lightner, one of the main mercenaries, kidnaps Cleo and threatens to murder her, Terrence demonstrates his genuine intention to safeguard Cleo. Ultimately, he sacrifices himself in this selfless act.
Following the pickup of Cleo, Lightner contacted Pope, asking him to deliver the amulet in exchange for Cleo’s safety. Upon Pope’s arrival, a confrontation between Lightner and Terrance occurred over the gun, resulting in it accidentally firing during the struggle, causing fatal injuries to Terrance.
Hollis Robinson is killed by Groff
Stepping into the second phase of events, the first significant demise of part 2 occurred in episode 8, with Groff contributing another victim to his tally, thereby solidifying his position as one of the series’ most formidable antagonists.
After acquiring the necessary lens to decipher the scroll, Groff intends to visit Hollis with the goal of collecting the money Rafe had agreed to pay them as part of their arrangement. However, when she arrives, Hollis pulls a gun on her, accusing him of deceit regarding their deal and suggesting that she is aware of his potential role in Wes’s demise. He might be hiding the truth about this matter.
When Hollis threatens Groff by saying she’ll report him to the authorities, he skillfully diverts her attention and successfully disarms her. He then employs the gun to murder her and escapes with Rafe’s money along with the keys to her yacht. Although we weren’t particularly fond of Hollis and suspected she was a problem from the moment she entered Rafe’s world, we never imagined her storyline would conclude so abruptly!
Pope kills Lightner in self-defense
When it comes to brief stints in a series, let’s include Lightner among those who only lasted for one season, often referred to as “one-season villains”. In the role of Dalia’s trusted confidant, Lightner swiftly demonstrated his physical prowess, serving as her powerful enforcer and chief lieutenant.
Instead of causing misery for The Pogues throughout this season, his actions elicited no sympathy whatsoever from us. In fact, we remained indifferent when he encountered his end in the season 4 finale. However, his demise took an unexpected turn.
In the climactic confrontation between Dalia’s group and the Pogues during their pursuit of the Blue Crown, it falls on Lightner to eliminate Pope and Cleo, unaware that Pope would be prepared and armed when Lightner entered their hidden sanctuary. Surprisingly, it was Pope who ended up defending himself, leading to Lightner’s demise. This event is likely to resurface in season 5 as Pope grapples with the moral implications of taking another’s life.
Sadly, JJ dies in Outer Banks season 4
Among many deaths that occurred during Outer Banks’ fourth season, none can compare to the heart-wrenching and startling demise of JJ, which unfolded in the final episode.
In the heat of our gaming adventure, after snatching the Blue Crown, Kiara and I (JJ) took off running as Dalia pursued us relentlessly. But a sudden sandstorm blurred our path, causing a split-second separation that Groff exploited cleverly. He ambushed Kiara, pointing his gun menacingly at her. When I finally caught up, Groff made it plain: he’d let Kiara go in exchange for the crown. In a heartbeat, without a second thought, I surrendered the crown to save my companion. For a moment, it seemed like we had escaped the danger.
In a revengeful act, JJ was stabbed by Groff instead. He informed his son that he should not have abandoned him in the well when there was a chance to rescue him earlier in the episode. Swiftly departing without a second glance, Groff solidified his position as the most detestable and merciless antagonist the series has known.
After this, one of the most heart-rending scenes ever occurred in the series, with JJ uttering his final words, asking Kiara to look after the Pogues and expressing his love for her before he passed away. Any remaining uncertainty about whether JJ had merely fainted from his wound was dispelled when the Pogues were shown burying him in the desert and mourning his death, promising revenge as the season concluded.
Rafe does not die in Outer Banks season 4
In the fourth season of “Outer Banks,” numerous characters met their untimely ends, but viewers can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that Drew Starkey’s character, Rafe Cameron, is still very much alive and kicking. Despite a few near-death experiences in the season finale, Rafe manages to survive and will likely be instrumental in shaping the events of the show’s final season.
For those curious about the reason behind some viewers’ anxiety regarding Rafe’s fate, it largely stems from the intense finale where Rafe encounters several life-threatening situations. At one point, Groff tries to deceive him, leading to a fight that results in Rafe getting his hand cut open. However, Rafe manages to turn the tables and overpowers Groff. Later in the episode, Dalia and her armed group corner Rafe, making it seem as though they will kill him. But just when it looks like all hope is lost, Sarah creates a diversion that allows Rafe to escape unharmed from the hands of Dalia and her crew.
