White Lotus Star Claps Back at Meghan McCain
Actress Carrie Coon, known for her role in The White Lotus, has responded to comments made by Meghan McCain during their recent public disagreement that arose when the show mentioned Donald Trump.
On the program, Coon’s persona became part of an internet sensation when three old friends had a political conversation over a bottle of wine. One of the females admitted to being a supporter of the Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement.
Meanwhile, in an open discussion with The Hollywood Reporter before the climactic final episode of the popular HBO series airs on Sunday, Coon has re-entered the debate to explain why McCain might have connected with that particular scene.
She mentioned that it brings joy to individuals like Meghan McCain and her group when they see a conservative figure appearing on TV.
Among the individuals in my circle who lean more traditionally, I’ve received feedback that our discussion was exceptional, as they feel it did not portray Kate negatively.
Following Trump’s joint address to congress in early March, I found myself emotionally moved to the point of tears, and I couldn’t help but share my feelings on X. (Here, “X” could be a specific social media platform or website where McCain expressed his emotions.)
For the first time, I recall shedding tears during a State of the Union address. Thank you, President Trump, for such a touching moment. Those who have encountered brain cancer understand just how profoundly meaningful this is, she expressed.

McCain’s father, the late senator John McCain, tragically died from brain cancer in 2018.
Who will break the news to her?
2 days after, McCain retaliated by posting a picture of Leslie Bibb, a cast member who portrays Trump-supporter Kate on the show, smiling, following his announcement of her character’s loyalty to friends within the scene.
Later, she mentioned that she was unsure if she would continue watching the show that evening because one of its actors had posted offensive comments on Twitter directed towards her.
According to Bibb, she was genuinely amazed by the Trump scene, commending the show’s creator, Mike White, for his remarkable knack at swiftly tapping into the spirit of the times.
According to Coon, he maintains a balance between being overtly political and avoiding it, since it turns out that the scene they were discussing was penned in 2022, well before Donald Trump’s second term as president.
Initially, they planned to film during 2023, but as Bibb shared, a writers’ strike occurred, causing a delay in production. This postponement raised apprehensions among the cast and crew that the show might appear ‘outdated’ by the time it was broadcast.
In truth, it had a much greater impact than anyone could have foreseen, as it was aired soon after President Trump’s inauguration and his return to the White House.

Instead, White decided to tone things down, omitting more of Trump’s lines during editing.
‘There was more to that conversation,’ Coon revealed.
At first, it was found out that Laurie’s child identifies as nonbinary, and Laurie is finding it challenging to adapt to their teenager using ‘they/them’ pronouns.
For Laurie, the Trump situation became significantly upsetting due to her daughter’s involvement. However, it was prior to Trump’s reelection and before the conflict against the transgender community intensified.
‘Mike felt that it was actually too political, or too far, or too distracting.’
In March of 2024, White initially felt that the scene seemed fitting, however, when it came down to the last editing decisions, there was a noticeable change in ambiance or mood.
While I appreciate the attention, I’d prefer it wasn’t associated with extreme political views because they might overshadow the ideas I’m trying to convey.” This version maintains the original sentiment while using simpler and more common language.
