‘White Lotus’ ooh-loo-loses composer after feud with Mike White: ‘Had our last fight’

How might “White Lotus” lose its captivating music and distinctive “ooh-loo-loo-loo’s”? This is no longer a worry for the original composer, Cristobal Tapia de Veer.

It was confirmed on Thursday that the Emmy-winning artist has decided not to rejoin HBO’s popular show “White Lotus” for its fourth season, as he shared in an interview published on Wednesday. In conversation with The New York Times, the Chilean-Canadian musician revealed that creative disagreements with the showrunner Mike White were behind his decision to leave the series.

A representative for HBO declined to comment.

In simple terms, we’re eagerly awaiting the conclusion of ‘The White Lotus’ Season 3 this coming Sunday, April 6th. We can’t wait to find out what becomes of the visitors and staff at Mike White’s Thai resort!

The musician reminisced about his tenure on the show, mentioning how he proposed the Season 1 theme to White, who initially favored a different sound. “He wasn’t fond of the theme,” De Veer explained, further noting that White initially preferred a track with a club ambiance and a “relaxed, sensual atmosphere.” De Veer recollected the song was devoid of any sharpness, contrasting sharply with the “gritty and intense” character of his own compositions.

“It’s just nice background music,” De Veer recalled.

Originally featured in the first season of “White Lotus” in 2021, De Veer’s rendition of the theme gained popularity due to its distinctive warbled war cries. For the second season set in Italy, De Veer enhanced the original theme by blending operatic vocals with a lively dance rhythm. As the New York Times mentions, this updated version found its way into clubs and further increased its popularity on social media.

In February during the premiere of “White Lotus” Season 3, viewers observed a significantly altered theme. The familiar melodies and vocal trills that fans adored were conspicuously missing. De Veer mentioned that many are enraged by this change in the theme and expressed his willingness to share the longer version with the iconic “ooh-loo-loo-loos”, since he believes the audience would react explosively if they learn it was heading there all along. The complete Season 3 theme, including the original melody and “ooh-loo-loo-loos”, can be accessed on De Veer’s YouTube channel.

Carrie Coon, Michelle Monaghan, and Leslie Bibb gathered for a meeting to talk about their roles in “White Lotus” and how the conflict among their characters reaches its climax in Episode 7.

As a movie enthusiast, I found it intriguing when the producer suggested the idea. However, Mike didn’t feel quite right about it and decided to omit that particular aspect instead.

He stated: “In essence, by then, it seemed like we’d fought for the last time, as far as I can tell. Therefore, he was merely refusing any proposals.

In other parts of the interview, De Veer admitted he faced criticism for the Season 3 theme, but viewers eventually grew fond of it. While De Veer takes great pride in his work on “The White Lotus,” which has garnered him three Primetime Emmy awards, he expressed that Mike may think he was always uncooperative because he didn’t meet all of his expectations.

As a passionate movie enthusiast, I’d argue that amid our disagreements, I undeniably played a part in the Emmy-winning success of my music. It may have taken some time, but eventually, people couldn’t get enough of it and went absolutely wild over it.

He expressed great joy in taking such risks, stating that this was what brought him the most satisfaction. He felt it was all worth the stress and near-compulsion to incorporate the music into the performance, as he didn’t have many supporters there. He values this experience more than any other success he’s had, even those that came easily without much struggle.

The person responsible for “The White Lotus” is frequently associated with concepts like humanity and humility in discussions among people.

“This was a good struggle.”

For Season 3, “White Lotus” has garnered attention beyond its catchy theme tune. Lately, the program has been under fire due to an incest plotline and omitting a nonbinary character from the narrative. Additionally, controversy has arisen as Duke University criticized a scene featuring a character wearing university merchandise during explicit content.

The “White Lotus” Season 3 finale airs Sunday on HBO.
