As a lifelong Alien franchise devotee who’s had more encounters with the Xenomorphs than I care to remember, I can confidently say that while a comprehensive rewatch of the series is always enjoyable, it’s not absolutely necessary before catching Alien: Romulus in theaters.
As someone eagerly awaiting the cinematic release of “Alien: Romulus” this week, I’ve noticed a surge of fellow enthusiasts planning a comprehensive franchise rewatch before diving into the newest installment. However, is such a thorough retrospective truly necessary prior to experiencing the latest chapter in the series? Not necessarily.
As a die-hard fan, I always find it exhilarating to revisit the Alien film series before catching a new movie at the theater. However, if time is short, there’s no need to worry about squeezing in all six main films (or even eight if you count the Alien vs. Predator movies). Enjoy the experience of watching one or two favorites instead!
“The movie ‘Alien: Romulus’ is set between two films in the Alien series – Ridley Scott’s original ‘Alien’ from 1979 and James Cameron’s ‘Aliens’ from 1986. This means that if you want to understand the story, it would be helpful to watch or re-watch the first ‘Alien’ film.”
Where to stream all of the main Alien movies right now:
- Alien (1979) on Hulu
- Aliens (1986) on Hulu & Max
- Alien 3 (1992) on Hulu
- Prometheus (2012) on Hulu
- Alien: Covenant (2017) on Hulu
As a gaming enthusiast, here’s my take: “If you’re hankering for a thrill with the Alien vs. Predator series, lucky you! They’re currently streaming on Hulu. A Hulu subscription grants you access to the entire franchise, but don’t wait too long, who knows when they might disappear!”

Alien: Romulus also features a video game shoutout
The movie not only sticks to the Alien storyline but also includes nods and hidden references to other events within the series, such as a tribute to the nail-biting video game, Alien: Isolation.
In an interview with Inside Total Film podcast, Director Fede Álvarez disclosed that the film strategically places phones throughout its narrative. This technique serves as a warning to viewers, indicating that a potentially ominous event is imminent. The use of phones in this manner draws parallels to their function as “save points” in the video game Alien: Isolation, so those who have played the game will understand the significance when a phone appears on-screen.
The sci-fi series “Alien: Romulus” centers around a team of space explorers as they discover a chilling creature within an abandoned spacecraft. In the lead roles are Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, and Isabela Merced.
At present, it’s an exciting era for enthusiasts of the Alien franchise! Not only is there a new movie by Álvarez on the horizon, but FX’s Fargo showrunner, Noah Hawley, is developing an Alien television series as well. Tentatively titled Alien: Earth, this project is expected to hit screens in 2025.
