The celebrated director, age 78, passed away Sunday with his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, in what police are investigating as a possible murder. He directed many popular films from the 1980s and 90s that people still enjoy today, including the romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally…, the coming-of-age story Stand By Me, and the thriller Misery.

However, Obama emphasized that Rob’s productions were rooted in a strong faith in humanity, a belief he actively lived by. When Harry Met Sally… (1989)

Released in 1989, When Harry Met Sally… is a beloved romantic comedy often considered one of the greatest of all time. Even decades later, the movie is famous for its memorable lines, like “I’ll have what she’s having,” and Harry’s heartfelt declaration of love.

Misery (1990)

The 1990 thriller Misery is based on the Stephen King novel of the same name. It starts with successful author Paul Sheldon being saved by Annie Wilkes, a woman who claims to be his biggest fan. However, things quickly take a terrifying turn when Annie discovers Paul killed off a character she loved in his latest book, and she decides to hold him captive in her home in Colorado.

A Few Good Men (1992)

As a film buff, I always recommend checking out A Few Good Men from 1992. It’s a fantastic drama about a military lawyer and his colleague who have to defend these two Marines accused of a crime down in Cuba. It was originally a play by Aaron Sorkin – the same guy behind The West Wing – and it’s got a seriously great cast, including Tom Cruise, Kevin Bacon, and Demi Moore. It even got nominated for an Academy Award, which isn’t surprising given how gripping the story is.

The American President (1995)

The 1995 film The American President tells the story of widowed President Andrew Shepherd, who unexpectedly falls in love with environmental lobbyist Sydney Ellen Wade. This romance throws his presidency and political future into chaos.

Flipped (2010)

In 2010, director Rob Reiner adapted Wendelin Van Draanen’s novel into the charming coming-of-age film, Flipped. The movie tells the adorable story of first love between two children named Juli and Bryce.
