Where to stream 15 classic horror movies this October 2024

As a child of the 80s, I can still remember the chills that ran down my spine when I first watched The Shining on a small black and white TV. Jack Nicholson’s unhinged performance as Jack Torrance was nothing short of terrifying, but it was Shelley Duvall’s heart-wrenching portrayal of Wendy Torrance that truly made the film for me. Her performance was so raw and emotional, it felt like I was watching a piece of her soul being ripped away.

By now, we’ve all reached October, which means many of us have plunged headlong into marathons of spine-tingling horror films. Luckily, there are ample choices on TV and streaming platforms. However, if you’re seeking a truly laid-back Halloween experience and want to immerse yourself in some timeless, classic horror flicks, here’s an idea: create your very own marathon of old-school chills!

Those classic movies shaped the horror genre we know today. While contemporary horror is captivating too, there’s an allure during the autumn months that compels me to re-experience the films that molded me into the devotee of this genre I am now.

With numerous streaming platforms at our fingertips today, it’s often challenging to stay informed about what’s available for streaming and where, particularly during this season when all services are boosting their horror collections with exclusive releases. Fortunately, this handy guide can assist you in locating these classic horror films such as Halloween, Scream, Hellraiser, Poltergeist, The Exorcist, and many others, all conveniently in one place!

Keep in mind that certain timeless horror movies such as Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th are currently unavailable for streaming, but you can still rent or buy them online, either digitally or physically.

Halloween (1978) (Shudder)

Rewind to the night when he arrived home with one of the most famous slasher films ever made – John Carpenter’s Halloween. Right now, you can stream it on Shudder and it seems like it will stay there for much of October. Why not kick off this month by watching it and dropping in on Michael Myers and Laurie Strode? If you haven’t seen the 1978 movie yet, then make sure to add it to your watchlist as soon as possible.

Rosemary’s Baby (Prime Video, Paramount+)

In light of the fresh prequel movie, “Apartment 7A,” starring Julia Garner, it’s an ideal moment to revisit the classic original. Based on Ira Levin’s novel, “Rosemary’s Baby” unfolds the tale of Rosemary and Guy Woodhouse as they settle into the eerie and towering Bramford apartment building in New York City. As Rosemary forges friendships with an elderly couple residing nearby, her suspicions grow when she becomes pregnant, believing that something sinister is afoot concerning her unborn child.

Poltergeist (AMC+)

One of my all-time favorites, often overlooked for its true impact, is a movie I highly recommend – “Poltergeist,” directed by Tobe Hooper. If you’ve seen the original Texas Chain Saw Massacre, don’t miss out on this other gem of his. Witness the chilling tale where Carol Anne converses with static on her TV one fateful night, and watch as her family struggles to rescue her when supernatural beings within their home abduct her into another dimension.

The Shining (AMC+, Max)

Experience the chilling thrill of “The Shining” now! Witness Jack Nicholson’s mesmerizing transformation as Jack Torrance, a role that showcases his acting prowess. Originating from Stephen King’s novel of the same name, “The Shining” is a horror classic that deserves to be revisited year after year. Regrettably, Shelley Duvall, who gave an emotionally stirring portrayal as Wendy Torrance, passed away earlier this year. In her memory, let’s appreciate her exceptional performance in the film. While you’re here on Max, consider watching Mike Flanagan’s compelling sequel, “Doctor Sleep”.

The Exorcist (AMC+, Max)

Max seems to be the go-to destination this Halloween, boasting an array of both classic and contemporary horror films currently streaming. Among them is the legendary _The Exorcist_, once renowned as the scariest movie ever made and still believed to be so by many. Linda Blair offers an unforgettable performance as young Reagan who is tormented by a terrifying demon.

Alien (Hulu)

Beginning October 15th, the PVOD release of “Alien: Romulus” is here! To enhance your viewing experience, consider revisiting Ridley Scott’s timeless classic from 1979, “Alien.” As a direct sequel to this original film, you’ll find yourself appreciating “Alien: Romulus” even more if you’ve recently watched “Alien.” Whether you’re experiencing “Alien: Romulus” for the first time this month or revisiting it, don’t forget to catch up on the first movie!

Scream (Max)

Instead of waiting for the release of Scream 7, you can revisit Ghostface’s initial spree of terror and the beginnings of characters like Sidney Prescott, Gale Weathers, and Dewey Riley by watching the original four Scream movies. These films are currently available on Max. To catch up with Scream 5 and Scream 6, you’ll need to switch over to Paramount+.
