Marshals spoilers follow.
The new show Marshals, a spin-off of the popular series Yellowstone, began last night with a focus on Kayce Dutton, played by Luke Grimes. However, the first episode included a surprising twist that caught many viewers off guard.
Many people expected Kelsey Asbille to return as Monica Long Dutton in the new spin-off of the Western drama. However, she wasn’t featured in any of the show’s advertising, which was surprising.
What to Read Next
As revealed in the first episode of the Paramount+ series, Monica isn’t just missing – she’s actually deceased. She died from cancer caused by toxic chemicals that were illegally dumped on the land.
It’s unclear whether Asbille left the show on good terms or after a disagreement, as both the actor and the show’s producers haven’t publicly shared any details about their departure.
Grimes explained to Entertainment Weekly that the ending for Kayce in Yellowstone—riding off into the sunset—felt incomplete. She argued that simply letting him live his dream wouldn’t create any compelling conflict or drama for the story.
He’s going to need a good reason to rejoin the police force. Otherwise, why would he even consider taking a badge again? He famously quit by throwing his badge away – will he actually go back and retrieve it?
Even so, Grimes was surprised by the decision. She explained, “I really didn’t see that coming when I found out their plan. I was really disappointed, because Kelsey is a close friend and one of the most talented actors I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with.”
We’re very close, and I used to think it was impossible to picture things without her. It felt like Kayce and Monica were inseparable – one and the same. But I’ve also come to understand that there’s a much larger story behind their relationship.
Spencer Hudnut, the showrunner for Marshals, also discussed the choices made during production. He explained that it was crucial to remain true to the character and use her storyline to raise awareness about the challenges facing reservations.

Because she died, Tate attended the rally, and Kayce is now following a path she set for him. Though she’s gone, her influence will be felt throughout the series, as she deeply shaped Kayce into the man he is and will continue to guide him.
It’s unclear exactly how Kayce will react to Monica’s death, but the show’s creator, Taylor Sheridan, has said his grief will be a major focus. Actor Luke Grimes hinted that Kayce’s emotional response could be quite intense and unpredictable.
