Where are Lyle and Erik Menendez now? (The answer isn't as surprising as you'd think)

As a seasoned gamer who’s navigated countless virtual worlds and faced my fair share of challenges, I must say that the Menendez brothers’ saga is one tale that keeps me hooked, even though it unfolds in reality rather than a game. The intrigue, drama, and twists are reminiscent of a well-crafted narrative, where the lines between good and evil blur, and motives remain hidden until the very end.

For approximately three decades now, the tragic tale of Lyle and Erik Menendez, who gained notoriety in 1989 for murdering their parents Jose and Mary Louise Menendez, has resurfaced and is enthralling a fresh audience once more, thanks to its adaptation on Netflix.

This season on Netflix’s Emmy-winning series Monster, the Menendez brothers are taking center stage, retelling the story of their notorious murder trial in March 1990. Now streaming as Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story on Netflix, the case has gained renewed attention as viewers delve deeper into the true crime saga, exploring the events leading to the killings of José and Mary Louise Menendez, the sensational trials, and the subsequent fates of Lyle and Erik.

Now, it seems odd to add a spoiler warning to a piece discussing real-life events that happened decades ago, but given we’re exploring the Lyle and Erik story through the context of the Netflix show, let this be a warning that spoilers are to come regarding the events Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story is based upon.

Lyle and Erik were found guilty, just not after their first trial

After the fatal shooting of Jose and Kitty Menendez on August 20, 1989, authorities launched an investigation into their deaths. Eventually, in March 1990, they apprehended the suspects – Lyle and Erik Menendez, who were identified as their own children.

After their apprehension, Lyle and Erik stood trial for the homicide of their parents, with the formal proceedings commencing on July 20, 1993. As the court dates arrived for Lyle and Erik, it became clear that they were responsible for the deaths of their mother and father. However, the primary point of intrigue in this case was the reason behind these murders.

As a gamer, I’d rephrase it like this: During the trial, my brothers Lyle and Erik revealed some shocking truths about our father – they testified that he had been sexually abusing us for years, with our mother standing by and letting it happen. They claimed that the fear we felt, fear for our lives, ultimately pushed us to take action against him, which became the crux of our defense team’s argument – that what we did was in self-defense. However, the prosecution painted a different picture, suggesting that our actions were premeditated and driven by greed.

Following numerous court hearings, the trial concluded unsuccessfully with both juries unable to reach a consensus, indeed it was two separate juries. In their initial trial, the brothers were judged by two separate juries concurrently as they stood trial independently. Since the juries failed to agree, a second trial was mandated and commenced in 1995; however, this time there was only one jury involved.

In the second court case, the judge restricted the defense lawyers from presenting claims that the defendants, the brothers, had been accused of sexual abuse. After 16 hours of careful consideration, the jury found both Lyle and Erik guilty of first-degree murder in 1996. Although capital punishment was an option, they were instead given two life sentences with no possibility of parole, served one after the other.

Where are Lyle and Erik as of 2024?

Currently, in 2024, Lyle and Erik continue to serve their sentences in prison, having been incarcerated since their arrests for the murders of their parents, José and Mary Louise Menendez, which occurred in 1990. At the time of the crime, they were 21 (Lyle) and 18 (Erik). Today, both brothers are still alive; Lyle is now 56 years old, while Erik will be celebrating his 53rd birthday this coming November.

Initially, Lyle and Erik were individually confined in different prisons because, during their initial conviction, it was common practice to keep prisoners who had committed crimes together apart in jail. This decision was also based on the cautionary advice of the detective handling the case, who expressed concern that if the brothers were housed in the same prison, they might try to escape together.

In April of 2018, following a long separation that spanned over two decades since their court case concluded in 1996, Lyle and Erik were placed together in the same prison unit. This is where they’ve been able to visit each other during leisure hours and shared meals for the first time since then.

Being classified as Group A prisoners in California granted them privileges such as receiving letters and visits, making phone calls within the corrections system. It was through this arrangement that both brothers met their future spouses. Specifically, Erik connected with Tammi Saccoman, who later became his wife in 1999 after they exchanged letters. Lyle married Rebecca Sneed in 2003, but prior to that, he had a brief marriage to Anna Eriksson, which ended in divorce in 2001 following a five-year union.
