When Maya Jama dumped Stormzy they claimed they had simply ‘grown apart’. But now insiders say the truth could be more humiliating for Britain’s ‘King of Rap’

When Maya Jama ended her relationship with rapper Stormzy, they mentioned growing apart as the reason following a decade of an up-and-down connection. This announcement left their fans disheartened as the beloved musical duo was no longer together.

Could it possibly be the case that the drop in popularity of the Love Island host, aged 30, in the music industry, led to her ending her relationship with her partner of five years, who is also 31?

Previously celebrated as the Sovereign of Rap, recent whispers among music industry insiders liken Stormzy to the “Hip Hop Cliff Richard,” due to his persistent demand for gospel tunes on his latest album titled This Is What I Mean.

In the year 2014, a swift and spectacular climb to fame as a British rapper brought him a fortune of £24 million and a devoted following. Fast forward to 2020, he was enticed away from Warner Records by Universal for an astounding £10 million.

Stormzy was brought on board universally, aiming to aid the re-establishment of his Def Jam record label, a platform that previously housed iconic hip-hop groups like Public Enemy and the Beastie Boys. However, this move turned out to be quite costly.

Unexpectedly, when working on his debut album with Universal, Stormzy chose to abandon his typical aggressive rapping style and instead opted to sing a collection of songs influenced by Christianity.

‘People are now calling him the Cliff Richard of hip hop.

Initially, it was anticipated that his latest album would serve as an ideal platform for Universal’s newly established Def Jam record label. However, due to its underperformance, there has been a shift in blame recently, which some say is the reason behind significant layoffs at the label.

In 2017, Stormzy released his debut album, Gang Signs and Prayer, which sold approximately 310,000 copies globally. As of now, his most successful album to date, Heavy is the Head (released in 2019), has sold around 320,000 albums worldwide.

Two of his rap albums achieved Platinum status, yet among them, This Is What I Mean, which carried a gospel-oriented tone, peaked at number one, but it only managed to sell approximately 60,000 copies – a relatively small figure when compared to his past ventures.

Currently, Stormzy’s latest single titled “Backbone,” a collaboration with DJ duo Chase and Status, is experiencing significant success. He’s back to his powerful rapping style in this track, and it has already sold an impressive 400,000 copies, reaching the top spot on the charts.

Supporters of his earlier British rap music were disappointed when he released a gospel-focused album instead. They criticized him for going against their expectations of his music.

As a die-hard Stormzy devotee, there are two tracks from his work that have left me yearning for more. His latest album almost lulled me into a peaceful slumber, but the moment “Heavy Is The Head” played, I was jolted back to life!

Previously, Stormzy and his long-time partner, television host Maya Jama, shared a public announcement that they had chosen to end their relationship permanently.

As a lifestyle expert, I’m sharing my personal plan: After much contemplation, I’ve decided to make one last attempt in August 2023. The past year has been all about dedication and hard work as I’ve strived to get it right. This final leap requires a great deal of problem-solving, reacquainting myself with old skills. Yet, through it all, my respect and admiration for the other person have only grown stronger.

Ever since the dazzling Ms Jama took over ITV2’s sensational Love Island, I simply can’t keep my eyes off the screen! Not only does she bring an infectious energy to the show, but it seems like her star is shining even brighter now that she’s reportedly dating Manchester City’s own Reuban Dias. Oh, how I wish I could be a fly on the wall in their whirlwind romance!

Simultaneously, it’s reported that Stormzy is in a relationship with the devout American R&B singer, Victoria Monet. He has also been concentrating on his faith.

In the lead-up to releasing my gospel album in 2022, I’ve been devoting myself wholeheartedly to nurturing my bond with the Divine.

I’ve chosen to focus on this, to draw nearer to God and strive to become a more devout person. However, it’s important to remember that I’m still a work in progress.

‘My dogs mean a lot to me, they’re a big part of my life, I’ve just been walking them twice a day.’
