When James Earl Jones met Carrie Fisher for the first time on The Big Bang Theory
As a seasoned gamer who’s spent countless hours immersed in the Star Wars universe, I must say that the episode of “The Big Bang Theory” titled “The Convention Conundrum” was nothing short of a masterpiece. The way they incorporated iconic figures from the saga into the narrative was brilliantly executed, and the cameo by James Earl Jones as Darth Vader was simply legendary.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but reminisce about the iconic geek sitcom “The Big Bang Theory,” renowned for its fascinating cameos. The ongoing feud between Dr. Sheldon Cooper and Wil Wheaton, a celebrated actor from “Star Trek,” was one of the show’s many highlights. In an episode, tech mogul Bill Gates made a visit to town, while Mark Hamill officiated a wedding as a token of gratitude for a character who found his lost pet dog. The Season 7 episode that left Star Wars fans in awe was “The Convention Conundrum.” When our beloved characters were unable to secure passes for San Diego Comic-Con, they felt the loss of the panels, star-studded appearances, and camaraderie that would have been theirs. In desperation, they began brainstorming inviting guests to their very own convention.
During their brainstorming session, they consider George Lucas, Billy Dee Williams, Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, among others, but neglect to include James Earl Jones in the list. A short while later, Sheldon shares that he has an opportunity with a renowned celebrity. While his friends jest about needing duct tape, chloroform, and predict that “Darth Vader will douse your head with soy sauce,” Sheldon instead goes to James Earl Jones’ preferred sushi establishment.
One amusing side-story unfolds as follows: Instead of dismissing him, James Earl Jones expresses his enthusiasm for Star Wars and convinces Sheldon to hang out with him. They sing karaoke together, visit a sauna, and even enjoy a Ferris wheel ride. However, the real fun kicks in when James invites his new buddy over for an innocent practical joke at his house.
In an interview with IGN, Executive Producer Steven Molaro revealed that Carrie Fisher and James Earl Jones had never interacted off-set because Jones recorded Darth Vader’s lines in a sound booth. Later, Jones referred to their brief interaction as “a small scene that provided an opportunity for us to play off each other.
The “small incident,” depicting a flustered and robed Carrie Fisher answering the door with a baseball bat to object to the prank, was actually thought up by Jones himself. In this scene, Fisher yells at the chuckling Sith Lord, “James, it’s not FUNNY anymore!” However, backstage, she showed more enthusiasm, addressing him affectionately as “Dad” when they crossed paths.
The situation is a classic example of a Dad joke: awkward for the person receiving it but amusing for the one telling it. Jones commented, “It was delightful. It was great to meet her.” This reminds us of a family gathering as James Earl Jones now unites with Carrie Fisher in the Force.
