The first part of the 2025 Call the Midwife Christmas special has offered a sneak peek at what’s coming up for Matthew’s character next year. If you’re wondering when the second half of the special will air on the BBC, here’s everything you need to know.
The team behind Call the Midwife has a lot on its plate right now! In addition to a special two-part holiday episode airing internationally, they’re also working on a feature film and a new series that explores the show’s origins. Plus, the show has been officially renewed for a fifteenth season.
The popular series is expanding with both international adventures for some beloved characters and a new show set in Poplar during World War Two. Fans can rest assured that these additions will fit seamlessly into the existing story, as they’re being developed by the same creative team – showrunner Heidi Thomas and executive producers Pippa Harris and Ann Tricklebank – who brought the original series to life.
What to Read Next
Before you watch the new episodes, you’ll want to catch up on the Christmas special to see what’s been happening with the midwives at Nonnatus House.
What time is episode 2 of Call the Midwife’s Christmas special on BBC One and iPlayer?
Episode two follows episode one by a whole day – a full 24 hours of titillating suspense.
It airs on BBC One and iPlayer on Boxing Day, 26 December, at 8.30 pm.

If you love Call the Midwife, you can watch all previous episodes on iPlayer while you wait for the second part of this year’s Christmas special.
The first part of the story followed the experienced midwives of Nonnatus House as they journeyed to Hong Kong to address a serious emergency at the Order’s overseas branch. Upon arriving with Fred and Violet, they discovered the branch house in Kowloon had tragically collapsed, resulting in numerous deaths.
So, things are really kicking off in Call the Midwife! They’re scrambling to put together a rescue mission and a team from Nonnatus House is getting ready to head to Hong Kong. Meanwhile, I’m watching Dr. Turner and Shelagh try to help Esther and her sick little boy – it’s pretty tense!

The second part of the story sees the rescue team in Hong Kong facing danger. Meanwhile, back in Poplar, the midwives at Nonnatus House are having a lively Christmas party. Despite some emotionally difficult moments, actress Molly Vevers (who plays Sister Catherine) assures viewers that the sadder parts are balanced by the festive spirit of the episode (according to the BBC).
According to actor Stephen McGann, viewers can expect significant changes in future episodes of Call the Midwife. He hinted at major developments, saying, “There is just so much change coming.” While avoiding spoilers, he explained that recent seasons have foreshadowed these shifts, and they are now becoming fully realized. “There’s some stuff that is coming over the hill that is really real,” he added.

McGann also shared that the new episodes will deliver the heartwarming, traditional scenes fans love from Call the Midwife, and that the most recent script deeply affected the actors.
Regarding potential future travel or international storylines, McGann hinted that while things won’t be exactly as they were before, the show will continue to explore new directions. He jokingly added that even the show’s creators are often surprised by what happens next.
Season 15 is set in 1971 and, true to the show’s style, explores relevant issues of the era, including the Women’s Liberation Movement and the legacy of slavery. It also features medical storylines about premature birth, placenta previa, kidney cancer, and tuberculosis.
For now, you can settle in and enjoy the heartwarming (and maybe a little sad!) two-part Call the Midwife special. Those future plans can wait!
The second part of the Call the Midwife Christmas special will air on BBC One and be available to stream on BBC iPlayer on Boxing Day, December 26th, at 8:30 pm.
The latest issue of Living Legends is now available, and it’s dedicated to the incredible Dolly Parton! You can purchase ‘Dolly at 80’ at all good newsagents or online for only £8.99.
