In the movie “Weapons,” Josh Brolin portrays Archer Graff, a man whose life has been shattered by his son’s disappearance. This thought consumes him, causing him to neglect his duties as a contractor and even sleep in his child’s bed at night. Scenes show Archer wrapped in the boy’s Batman sheets, and though his actions are tinged with despair, they led to an amusing event on set: Brolin actually fell asleep during filming.
During our conversation at the Los Angeles press day for “Weapons” towards the end of last month, the actor shared an amusing behind-the-scenes moment with me. The discussion began with me inquiring about his interpretation of the dream scene featuring Archer in the movie, which triggered a laugh as he admitted falling asleep on set, unbeknownst to the cameras. As reported in the video above, Brolin humorously recounted this occurrence.
During that moment, a sound like a shot seemed to pass by me on one side, continue over me, and carry on. Yes, I dozed off at that point. I had been intending to dream, and perhaps I was dreaming. However, it seems I wasn’t dreaming the dream portrayed in the movie. Indeed, I dozed off.
In simpler terms, I asked if his day of filming was unusually long, and he replied that it wasn’t related to the day specifically but rather a part of his life when he’s working. It seems Josh Brolin might be foregoing the CDC-recommended seven hours of sleep for adults when he’s busy with work.
He felt exhausted, and he found himself in a cozy bed, and for his mind, that summed up to “sleep”. Many of us can likely identify with this… even if most of us don’t have cameras capturing the moment. Luckily, writer/director Zach Cregger had a sense of humor about it:
During my work hours, I forgo sleep, typically managing four to five hours each night. After approximately two and a half months of this lifestyle, shifting from one job to another, he found the situation amusing. He let out a laugh.
In simpler terms,
It seems that unique elements are increasingly being handled by smaller home video distributors rather than large studios. However, I’m quite hopeful that there will be at least a brief blooper reel featuring the camera mishap over Josh Brolin’s body and landing on his face while he was sleeping, in the upcoming 4K UHD/Blu-ray release of “Weapons”. The actor found it amusing, as did Zach Cregger at the time, and I believe it would be quite humorous to watch. If I had interviewed the filmmaker during the press day after speaking with Brolin instead of before, I definitely would have inquired about this specific incident.
Featuring Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, Benedict Wong, and Amy Madigan, the movie titled “Weapons” is currently screening in cinemas nationwide. It’s the talk of the town – generating a lot of buzz for weeks before its release, and outperforming expectations during its opening weekend at the box office. I strongly advise you to catch it soon if you haven’t already, as the climax is quite mind-blowing, and you wouldn’t want to hear spoilers about it!
