When Does Marvel Zombies Take Place? MCU Canon & Timeline Explained

Now that *Marvel Zombies* has finished, many viewers are curious about exactly *when* and *where* it fits into the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. With so many new movies and shows being released each year, the MCU timeline can be confusing. Here’s a breakdown of where *Marvel Zombies* stands in the official MCU story.

Where is Marvel Zombies set in MCU canon?

Even though the story in Marvel Zombies is officially part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it doesn’t happen in the main timeline that most fans know. Instead, it takes place in a different universe where a zombie virus has turned popular heroes into flesh-eating zombies.

No matter what occurred in the series, it won’t affect the main storyline of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as seen in the films and other shows. And you won’t see any zombie versions of Marvel heroes appearing in future MCU projects.

When does Marvel Zombies take place in MCU timeline?

As a huge Marvel fan, I’ve been following the news about ‘Marvel Zombies,’ and it sounds like it picks up five years after that wild zombie episode from the first season of ‘What If…?’ Remember that episode, “What If… Zombies?!”? It was set in an alternate 2018. So, if you do the math, ‘Marvel Zombies’ will be happening around 2023 in that universe – basically, right after the events of ‘Endgame’ in that timeline. It’s going to be fascinating to see how everything plays out!

The animated episode of What If…? showed Janet van Dyne as the source of the Quantum Realm infection that led to the zombie outbreak. The Marvel Zombies series picks up after the outbreak has already begun in San Francisco. The What If…? episode, “What If… Zombies?!” left viewers with a cliffhanger, showing the heroes preparing to fight zombie Thanos in Wakanda, a battle we briefly see in Marvel Zombies where T’Challa ultimately defeats him.

Currently, Disney hasn’t announced whether Marvel Zombies will return for another season. Despite this, the people behind the show are optimistic. Brad Winderbaum, a leader at Marvel Television, recently told Comicbook.com that the show’s future depends on viewers tuning in. He said, “We really need people to subscribe to Disney+ and watch! If they do, we can make more, and we’re eager to do so.”

We’re still waiting for Disney to officially approve these plans. But fans can be excited about future Marvel Cinematic Universe projects like Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Avengers: Doomsday, which will bring us back to the storylines we know and love.
