Fans of the “Paraverse” got a delightful Christmas surprise when Commissioner Selwyn from “Death in Paradise” appeared in the “Beyond Paradise” Christmas special. Even more surprisingly, he served as Humphrey’s best man at a secret wedding to Martha!
This moment felt deeper than it looked, and it strengthened the connection between them, solidifying their developing relationship.
Their party was cut short when the Commissioner got an urgent call from Saint Marie. Detective Inspector Mervin Wilson needed help with a difficult case, and it sounded serious.

Selwyn traveled to Swindon on Christmas Eve to investigate, but this creates a problem. Doesn’t the episode show Humphrey and Martha getting married that same day? If their wedding was after 5 PM, as the show clearly stated, how could Selwyn have gotten to Swindon earlier in the day on Christmas Eve?

There’s no way he could have done it. It feels like one of those puzzling mysteries you see on shows like Death in Paradise, though thankfully without anyone actually dying.
Even though the words ‘Christmas Eve’ appeared on screen when Selwyn arrived in Swindon, clearly showing the date, the Beyond Paradise Christmas special never explicitly mentions the day it takes place.

Throughout the episode, people often wished Martha and Humphrey a “Merry Christmas,” which led many viewers to believe their wedding took place on Christmas Eve – seemingly just around the corner.
It was clear the episode wasn’t set on Christmas Day because of what was happening with the wedding. Shops were open, and no one mentioned Christmas traditions or missing the holiday to work on the case. It’s logical to conclude the wedding took place the day before.
Despite all the discussion about Christmas, it’s impossible for Selwyn to have traveled from Devon to Swindon before nightfall, considering the 127-mile distance. Therefore, they must have gotten married a few days before Christmas.

Some believe the wedding happened on December 21st, the day the show aired. However, considering how quickly Mervin needed help, Selwyn probably would have traveled to Swindon the following day. This means Martha and Humphrey could have gotten married on December 23rd instead.
Ultimately, we can’t be certain unless the show Beyond Paradise shares more details in future episodes.
Hopefully we won’t have to wait until next Christmas special, for their anniversary, to find out.
