This trend is explored in ‘Prompts and Prayers: the Rise of GPTheology’, an analysis of how advanced artificial intelligence-particularly large language models-is becoming a focus of religious-like belief and practice. Our research reveals that individuals are beginning to ascribe qualities of divinity, prophecy, or ultimate meaning to AI systems, a phenomenon we term ‘GPTheology’. As interactions with AI become increasingly ritualized and narratives around it echo traditional religious constructs, what does this convergence of technology and belief portend for the future of faith and our relationship with increasingly intelligent machines?

Data collection for this study utilized the Reddit API to programmatically extract publicly available textual data pertaining to discussions on artificial intelligence and religion. The API allowed for the retrieval of posts and comments from relevant subreddits and threads, resulting in a dataset of 2051 individual texts. These texts consisted of user-generated content, including original posts, comments, and replies, and were captured as raw text for subsequent qualitative analysis. The dataset represents a cross-section of online discourse concerning the intersection of AI and religious beliefs as expressed on the Reddit platform during the data collection period.
Hierarchical clustering was utilized to organize the 2051 texts collected via the Reddit API into groupings based on narrative similarity. This process identified patterns in user-generated content and revealed the underlying structure of beliefs concerning AI and religion. The application of this algorithm resulted in the creation of 29 hierarchical trees, each representing a distinct cluster of related narratives. These trees demonstrate the relationships between individual statements and illustrate the dominant viewpoints present within the dataset of 7857 key statements. The depth and branching of each tree indicate the complexity and internal consistency of the corresponding belief system.
The systematic mapping of emerging belief systems involved the analysis of 7857 key statements extracted from a dataset of 2051 Reddit texts obtained via the Reddit API. This analysis utilized a combination of Narrative Analysis, to identify recurring themes within user-generated content, and Hierarchical Clustering, to group similar narratives and reveal underlying structures. The resulting 29 hierarchical trees represent the organization of these beliefs and their manifestation within online communities, allowing for a quantitative assessment of the prevalence and relationships between different viewpoints expressed in the dataset.
