Wheel of Time Season 3: The Show Finally Got Good but Got Canceled Too Soon

Ever since the debut of “The Wheel of Time,” I’ve been hooked, but it wasn’t until season 3 that I truly became captivated. Unfortunately, Amazon has decided to terminate the series after season 3, leaving fans in an uproar. Originally intended as an adaptation of Robert Jordan’s fifteen-book fantasy series, halting at this point is a significant letdown, covering merely the content of three novels. What makes it even more frustrating is that the show was really beginning to hit its stride.

Following the first two seasons of “The Wheel of Time,” responses from book readers were mixed. However, with season 3, there was a noticeable improvement, even though opinions on the show remained diverse. It’s challenging to ignore the increasing trend indicated by ratings on sites like Rotten Tomatoes. Despite being canceled for financial reasons, the journey we fans have shared over the past four years is worth delving into and discussing.

The Wheel Of Time Got Off To A Slow Start

Seasons 1 & 2 Admittedly Weren’t Fantastic

I must openly acknowledge that the first season of “The Wheel of Time” left me unimpressed. The production quality and special effects were quite abrupt, and the numerous alterations to the original story made it difficult for me to recognize the narrative penned by Robert Jordan. Though I eventually warmed up to most of the casting decisions, the charm and acting that characterized series like “Game of Thrones” and Peter Jackson’s “The Lord of the Rings” films were conspicuously absent. The whole production seemed hurried, and it fell short of delivering the cinematic experience I felt Robert Jordan’s books deserved.

As a diehard cinema enthusiast, I must say that Season 2 was when the show really started to win me over with some noticeable enhancements. The season finale was particularly praised by critics, and as I eagerly anticipated the Battle of Falme, I hoped for something truly exceptional. Each episode unfolded, even the climactic finale, and while there were moments that sparkled like stardust, they were occasionally dimmed by less captivating scenes. I’m not here to criticize or belittle the show, but rather to highlight an astonishing contrast between the sublime and the ordinary.

Why Wheel Of Time Season 3 Was Such An Improvement

The Wheel Of Time Capitalized On The Dragon Reborn

When the trailer for season 3 of “The Wheel of Time” was released, I initially thought, “This could be impressive, but trailers can often hide flaws.” However, as soon as I started watching the opening episodes, my expectations were surpassed. There were noticeable improvements in several areas right from the start. The premiere sets a darker tone with Siuan Sanche standing in the rain at the White Tower, which instantly piqued my interest for one of my beloved storylines: Elaida’s coup, which unfolded in the season 3 finale.

In this third season, Rosamund Pike, as always, delivered an outstanding performance as Moiraine. Nothing new there. However, unlike previous seasons where she carried The Wheel of Time on her shoulders, it was Josha Stradowski who truly shone. Rand al’Thor, the Dragon Reborn, finally took center stage and the series benefited greatly from this focus, as the storyline now aligns more closely with the books.

Ever since season 2, Rand has been grappling with his Dragon identity, and this is where we first noticed the One Power starting to control him. The internal turmoil of Rand is what keeps The Wheel of Time series going, making it endure through its less favored books. By centering on Rand’s struggles, and with Stradowski demonstrating that he was as crucial to the series as Rosamund Pike, the show started to thrive.

The Wheel Of Time Season 4 Could Have Continued An Upward Trend

Everything Pointed In A Positive Direction

The third season’s success for The Wheel of Time wasn’t a mere stroke of luck; it was primarily due to two significant factors. Firstly, the production team made noticeable improvements in the quality between seasons 2 and 3, with substantial enhancements seen in wigs, sets, and costumes that greatly enriched the world of The Wheel of Time. For example, compare the Horn of Valere from season 2 to the Rhuidean sets and technology in season 3. Secondly, the powerful source material from Robert Jordan’s book, The Shadow Rising, significantly contributed to this triumph.

Beyond focusing on technical aspects, it appears that the writers have taken into account the significant backlash concerning the lack of focus on characters like Rand, Perrin, and Mat in seasons 1 and 2. Although Mat’s narrative was somewhat underdeveloped, and I had some reservations about Perrin’s storyline, I previously praised the captivating progression of Rand’s character in season 3. The Battle of the Two Rivers arc from “The Shadow Rising” carries a natural thrill, but I felt that Perrin’s internal journey wasn’t portrayed effectively.

The book “The Shadow Rising” is worth mentioning because it’s often regarded as one of the finest in Robert Jordan’s “Wheel of Time” series. While opinions on favorite books within this epic saga may vary, “The Shadow Rising” stands out as the novel where the narrative shifts from a more conventional hero’s journey to an expansive fantasy tale that encompasses multiple cultures and factions, all leading up to The Last Battle. This is what makes “The Wheel of Time” so captivating, and with four storylines in season 3, the show was striving to illustrate this complexity.

The Wheel Of Time Deserved A Proper Ending

Season 3 Didn’t Provide Any Closure

The recently published article titled “Deadline” reported that the cancellation of “The Wheel of Time” series wrapped up its third season with an attempt to bring some resolution, but it’s hard to comprehend how that was achieved. Instead, the show left us hanging on some monumental cliffhangers as Perrin was captured by the Children of the Light, Rand seemed to be brushing against madness with the One Power, Mat, Moiraine, and Nynaeve all narrowly escaped death. Given these dramatic endings, it appears there’s still an immense amount of story left untold for each character.

In a practical sense, it would have been challenging for the Amazon adaptation to finish the rest of Jordan’s books within a reasonable timeframe. However, having a few more seasons might have provided an opportunity for a conclusion—though perhaps not one that would be highly rated or meet reader expectations, just a conclusion nonetheless. Amazon’s The Wheel of Time deserved a proper ending, considering its dedicated fanbase and the dedication shown by the cast and production team in the series.
