On December 13, 1982, White made her debut as a guest co-host on the popular ABC game show Wheel of Fortune. By the end of that very day, she had been appointed the permanent hostess for the show.
Previously, it was disclosed that she was chosen among 200 other contestants following Susan Stafford’s departure from the program in October 1982.
In her usual workday, the actress transforms letters on a board, captures local footage during roadshows, presents both jackpot and mystery segments, and unveils either the Wheel Prize or the Prize Puzzle solution.
Throughout her tenure with the show, she’s featured in more than 7,000 installments and just celebrated 40 years on the program around the end of 2022.
As reported by Puck News, she’s been earning an estimated annual salary of around $3 million since 2005, with the occasional extra payout as well.
In December 2019, she stepped in as the temporary hostess for Wheel of Fortune, filling the role of emcee while regular host Pat Sajak, aged 78, was admitted to the hospital due to an obstructed intestine and had to undergo emergency surgery.
In June, his sudden exit signaled the conclusion of a significant chapter for the beloved television game show that’s been broadcast since 1975.
When Ryan Seacrest, aged 49, stepped into the hosting role, White expressed concern that there might not be the same ‘chemistry’ between him and Sajak as there had been previously.
In an interview that aired on CBS Sunday Morning last September, she discussed her experience collaborating with a fresh co-host following more than four decades of working alongside Sajak.
She shared with the news outlet that she’s known Ryan for approximately 20 years. However, over the last few months, they’ve traveled together for their program, allowing them to become more acquainted. As a result, she believes their compatibility has improved.
She confessed that she didn’t know what to anticipate, given her familiarity with just one individual for such an extended period. However, she admitted feeling quite apprehensive initially, but he has been performing exceptionally well, she commented during their shared interview.
Seacrest stated, “This franchise is so extraordinary; it’s not just a television program, but something significant to many. When I learned about the chance to be involved, there was no hesitation – it was an immediate ‘yes, let’s make it work.’
Wheel of Fortune is currently in its 42nd season, which premiered on Monday, September 9, 2024.
In January 2023, it was announced by CBS Media Ventures President Steve LoCascio that the beloved game show would continue for another five years, running from the 2027-2028 season.
