“Wheel of Fortune,’ ‘Jeopardy!’ to stream on Hulu, Peacock

What shows no longer will air only on TV?

Starting this autumn, the popular game shows “Jeopardy!” and “Wheel of Fortune” will extend their reach beyond traditional television broadcasts onto streaming platforms such as Peacock and Hulu within the United States. This announcement was made on Tuesday by Sony Pictures Television.

Viewers can carry on with their usual habits as they tune into their local channels for fresh installments of their favorite shows.

For the very first time, current-season episodes will now be accessible on streaming platforms like Peacock (owned by NBCUniversal) and Hulu (which belongs to The Walt Disney Co.), just a day after they’ve been aired on traditional television broadcasts.

Sony’s decision is an acknowledgement that traditional TV audiences are growing older, prompting them to broaden the reach of their shows in order to remain appealing to a younger demographic. These agreements will grant Peacock and Hulu subscribers access to past episodes of these series, allowing viewers to marathon watch the puzzles.

Keith Le Goy, Chairman of Sony Pictures Television, expressed his excitement about making popular American game shows accessible to an even larger group of viewers on streaming platforms such as Hulu, Hulu on Disney+, and Peacock.

The higher court allowed CBS to keep broadcasting popular game show episodes to TV stations, as they await the outcome of their appeal against a previous court decision made at a lower level.

Sony owns the shows and produces them on its Culver City lot.

The change occurs since Sony is engaged in an ongoing dispute with CBS regarding the broadcasting rights to two TV series. Recently, a court in Los Angeles decided that Sony is no longer required to supply episodes to CBS, a practice they’ve been doing for many years, sending batches of episodes to television stations nationwide.

Following that decision, I, as a devoted fan, found myself expressing excitement as Paramount Global’s network chose to file an appeal. Subsequently, a panel of three esteemed judges temporarily halted the initial order and requested both parties to present their respective arguments. Not too long ago, these judges made a ruling in favor of CBS, allowing them to carry on distributing the shows during the appeals process.

CBS maintains Sony lacks the legal right to unilaterally sever ties.

In August, Sony ended its distribution agreement with CBS and subsequently filed a lawsuit alleging breach of contract. The lawsuit claimed that CBS illegally entered into licensing agreements for certain shows without Sony’s consent and then pocketed a commission. Additionally, Sony argued that CBS had imposed repeated budget cuts which hindered the network’s ability to effectively promote the two shows.

In February, Sony attempted to cut CBS out of the picture, escalating the dispute.

Starting this coming September, I’ll be catching the latest seasons of “Jeopardy!” and “Wheel of Fortune” on Hulu and Peacock. The 42nd season of Jeopardy! and the 43rd season of Wheel of Fortune are about to hit our screens, making this a thrilling time for game show enthusiasts like myself!
