What’s It Like Consulting With The Russo Brothers On MCU Films? Black Panther’s Ryan Coogler Shares His Take

In the upcoming year, the Marvel Cinematic Universe will witness another grand crossover event titled Avengers: Doomsday. This event will once again place directors Joe and Anthony Russo in control of various characters from the MCU, who are typically handled by different creators. Yet, Ryan Coogler, the director of the Black Panther franchise, remains unfazed as he collaborates effectively with them when it comes to his segment within the MCU, expressing that they are indeed respectful.

During a recent interview on SiriusXM radio, Ryan Coogler was questioned about the involvement of Wakandans in “Avengers: Doomsday”. Since the cast list for “Doomsday” has confirmed that Letitia Wright, the new Black Panther, will feature in the film, it’s a topic of interest. Although Coogler tactfully dodged discussing specifics about the upcoming “Avengers” movie, he did share insights on collaborating with the Russos on projects where Black Panther was present. He mentioned…

They were involved with me during the production of Captain America: Civil War (where I consulted on T’Challa), and again during Infinity War (where I consulted on Wakanda). These guys are truly professional, respectful individuals who have achieved great success. I feel privileged every time they ask for my input.

Black Panther first appeared in the film “Captain America: Civil War,” however, a standalone movie for this character had been planned from the start. Consequently, Ryan Coogler began working on “Black Panther” during the production of “Civil War.” Chadwick Boseman’s role as T’Challa in the “Captain America” film was agreed upon with Coogler’s endorsement.

Collaboration plays a crucial role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as multiple writers, directors, and actors contribute to various projects simultaneously. To ensure cohesion across these different stories, and to maintain consistency for each character from one film to another, it’s essential to lean on those who have a deeper understanding of these characters.

It appears that the Russo Brothers are eager to consult Ryan Coogler when dealing with the Black Panther character, and given their past collaborations, it’s reasonable to assume they sought his input for “Doomsday” too, even though Coogler hasn’t confirmed this.

Ryan Coogler isn’t the only one who seeks collaboration with the Russo Brothers when it comes to character handling; James Gunn, too, has discussed going over music selections with them regarding the Guardians of the Galaxy in “Infinity War”.

Absolutely, since the Russo Brothers are now working with a larger team due to the expanded size of the Marvel Cinematic Universe compared to when they made “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Endgame”, it’s safe to say that their collaboration will result in an even more impressive “Avengers: Doomsday”.
