What’s Happening With The Rookie’s New Spinoff At ABC? The Latest Update Should Please Fans
Many of the most popular scripted series on network television are currently taking a break during summer, but there’s some exciting news for fans of “The Rookie” starring Nathan Fillion. The spinoff that has been in development since late 2024 is gaining momentum at ABC and could potentially air during the 2025-2026 TV season or beyond.
The television series titled “The Rookie: North” is predicted to receive a pilot order from ABC, as reported by Deadline. This report suggests that the official green light might follow once the main actor has been chosen. Several actors are said to have been approached for the role. Creator Alexi Hawley seems to have discovered a formula for success by casting Nathan Fillion in the lead role of the original “The Rookie“; it may be necessary to find an actor with a similar caliber, given that the new spinoff bears some resemblance to the original show. Fillion is set to serve as executive producer alongside Hawley, who will also write if the series gets commissioned.
The project under development is based in Washington state instead of Southern California. Initial reports suggest that it will focus on a male character in his 40s to 50s who finds himself at a new stage in life. As for the character named “Alex,” he makes an unexpected decision to join the police force after encountering some unforeseen twists in his life. He would be interacting with trainers, fellow new recruits, and a police chief during this phase of his career.
As a film enthusiast, I initially dismissed the idea of this spinoff appearing as a mere duplicate of “The Rookie 2.0,” given that its location seems to be the only departure from the original series. However, I’ve seen how shows like “9-1-1” and its offshoot, “9-1-1: Lone Star,” managed to thrive for years before the latter was unfortunately canceled and concluded with a heartrending series finale in 2025. Intriguingly, ABC is planning to air “9-1-1: Nashville” this fall. If another franchise can succeed by setting their story in different locations, then why not extend the “Rookie” franchise as well?
As a dedicated fan, I’m excitedly speculating that the upcoming series, “The Rookie: North“, might have an advantage over its predecessor, “The Rookie: Feds“, which unfortunately only ran for one season. While “Feds” was a spinoff with a setting in Los Angeles, similar to the original series, I believe that the change of scenery to a new location for “North” could provide it with an unique identity, much like how “9-1-1” and its spinoff “9-1-1: Lone Star” can each stand alone.
It’s important to mention that “The Rookie: North” isn’t the only possible drama vying for a place on ABC. In fact, ABC has also recently picked up “RJ Decker,” starring Scott Speedman from “Grey’s Anatomy,” as its first pilot of 2025. While “North” could potentially be part of an established hit series, “RJ Decker” offers a fresh take with its story about a former tabloid photographer-turned-private investigator in South Florida, which might pique the interest of ABC viewers.
As a devoted movie critic, I find myself compelled to share some bittersweet news about Nathan Fillion’s beloved series, The Rookie. Alas, it seems we must wait until midseason 2026 for Season 8 to grace our screens, as the summer hiatus continues and leaves fans yearning for more.
However, in times like these, I always find solace in revisiting the rich tapestry of earlier episodes that make up this captivating series. With a Hulu subscription at your fingertips, you too can immerse yourself once more in the compelling world of The Rookie, and tide over the wait for its return in 2026.
