What's happening with Star Trek's live-action comedy?

As a long-time Star Trek fan who’s witnessed the evolution of this iconic franchise from its humble beginnings to its current multi-platform expansion, I am thrilled about the upcoming live-action comedy by Tawny Newsome and Justin Simien. The concept of two resort workers on Risa whose daily adventures are broadcast across the galaxy is not only innovative but also reminiscent of the beloved Deep Space Nine episodes that captivated me for years.

A new show that Star Trek has shown interest in is a jointly-created live-action comedy from Tawny Newsome and Justin Simien. The story revolves around two resort workers, rumored to be on Risa, who find out their everyday adventures are being broadcast across the entire galaxy. At this point, Paramount hasn’t given the series the go-ahead yet, but according to Newsome, one of the writers, she’s been told to keep writing.

In a recent chat with CinemaBlend, Newsome stated that “we just can’t stop writing, and our submissions keep getting accepted. They keep asking for more, so as long as they let us carry on and don’t tell us to halt production, we’ll keep working on it.

Requesting additional scripts by Paramount is a clear victory for the burgeoning series, as it shows executives are enjoying what they’re reading. This doesn’t guarantee success, but with Star Trek: Lower Decks wrapping up, there’s a shortage of series in the franchise. The upcoming Starfleet Academy series is next, and since 2017, Paramount has consistently delivered new episodes of Star Trek (with breaks due to Covid-19 and writers’ strikes). There’s no sign that Paramount intends to halt this pattern.

As a passionate gamer, I’m thrilled to share some exciting news! In January 2025, a new movie titled Section 31 will premiere on Paramount+. The mastermind behind this production, Alex Kurtzman, has shown keen interest in creating more streaming-exclusive movies. This means the franchise isn’t winding down, but it could also mean we might see series or films that may not appeal to everyone’s taste. But hey, variety is the spice of life, right? Let’s just hope there’s something for everyone!

As a devoted Star Trek enthusiast, I can’t help but express my anticipation for the live-action comedy series that Newsome and Simien are working on, given they’re also associated with Starfleet Academy. While some fans have voiced reservations, I personally find myself among the throng eagerly awaiting its release, particularly due to the fact that it stems from their shared affection for the bottle episodes of Deep Space Nine, specifically those featuring Quark – a connection that resonates deeply with me.
