What's going to happen in the back half of House of the Dragon Season 2?

As a passionate fan of House of the Dragon, I’m thrilled that we’ve witnessed an epic battle between the forces of Rhaenyra Targaryen and the Lannisters at Rook’s Rest. The excitement is now building up for the upcoming battles in season 2. Based on the source material from Fire & Blood, there are several potential candidates for the next big-budget action sequence.

Caution: The following contains major spoilers for “House of the Dragon” and its originating text, “Fire & Blood” by George R.R. Martin, that may significantly impact your viewing or reading experience if not yet completed.

Following the extraordinary installment of “House of the Dragon” on HBO last week, titled “The Red Dragon and the Gold,” this series is shaping up to be the must-watch summer show. In this captivating episode, the long-anticipated Battle of Rook’s Rest unfolded, along with a heartrending demise for Princess Rhaenys Targaryen (Eve Best). This battle, eagerly anticipated by fans of the source material “Fire & Blood,” was nothing short of epic. The episode has received an impressive rating of 9.6 on IMDb, standing tall among the elite episodes of “Game of Thrones” and breaking new ground as the highest-rated episode for “House of the Dragon” to date.

Following such an impressive display in “House of the Dragon” season 1, which predominantly concentrated on the build-up to the Battle of Rook’s Rest or the battle itself, one may ponder: what lies ahead for season 2?

As a dedicated gamer of “Game of Thrones,” I can tell you that the key to predicting the events of season 2 lies in its unique structure compared to the first season. Unlike the lengthier season 1 with ten episodes, season 2 will only have eight installments. However, what we lose in quantity, we gain in quality and excitement.

Which battle will it be?

Among the epic battles depicted in “Fire & Blood,” The Battle of Rook’s Rest stands out as undeniably the first major action sequence. Several other battles are strong contenders for the second appearance in the adaptation, including The Gullet, The Red Fork, The Honeywine, and The Battle by the Lakeshore. However, it remains to be seen which one will make its way into the final production.

In simpler terms, the Battle of the Red Fork is a lesser-known skirmish where rivermen allied with Rhaenyra clash with House Lannister’s forces. Only one character from the books, Jason Lannister portrayed by Jefferson Hall in the series, has been present in this battle on screen. The Battle of the Honeywine occurs between Rhaenyra’s followers and the army of the Hightowers, bolstered by Alicent Hightower’s son Daeron and his dragon Tessarion. Although Daeron is confirmed for the show, he won’t debut until next season. Due to Daeron’s significance in the battle, it might be best to wait before exploring this scenario further.

Among the two anticipated battles, the Battle by the Lakeshore is more probable to unfold this season based on various clues. In leaked photos, Lannister soldiers have been spotted riding through the woods, aligning with the description in “Fire & Blood” where they support Aegon II against the riverlords and northmen backing Rhaenyra. This battle, named the Fishfeed due to the high casualty count, is expected to occur at the Riverlands, the pivotal region of this conflict.

Will the battle happen in the season finale?

As a devoted fan of “Game of Thrones” and eagerly anticipating the second season of “House of the Dragon,” I strongly suspect that we’ll see a continuation of the established pattern. In the previous series, grand-scale battles were a common occurrence in penultimate episodes, with epic clashes like the Battle of Blackwater and the Battle of Meereen unfolding during these installments.

In a recently unveiled preview, several secondary figures are depicted gathered around a dining table, sharing drinks with Rhaenyra, Jace, and Baela Targaryen. These individuals belong to the dragonseed lineage, born as bastards yet in possession of Targaryen ancestry. The dragonseeds possess the extraordinary ability to command dragons, although they often face societal rejection.

At the lakeside, The Battle serves as a catalyst for the Greens’ subsequent actions. Provoked by the annihilation of their Lannister allies, Aemond and Ser Criston Cole set out from King’s Landing with the intention of confronting Daemon at Harrenhal. Their hasty decision leaves King’s Landing exposed to attack by Rhaenyra, Daemon, and the dragonseed alliance. Could this be the final episode of the season? Maybe. Though not an actual battle sequence, it could be incorporated as a coup plot, culminating in an electrifying conclusion for Rhaenyra and her supporters.

In episode 6, search for the sowing of the seeds as this event will pave the way for an amazing finale in the last two episodes of the season. The epic battle by the lakeshore is anticipated to unfold in these final episodes.
