What’s going on with The Split’s “compelling” return to the BBC? Here’s everything we know right now
In recent years, “The Split” has been a massive hit for the BBC. After completing its three-season run and a two-part special, it was announced last year that a sequel or offshoot series would be developed.
The series titled “The Split Up” centers around a fresh group of legal professionals known as the Kishans. It’s widely acclaimed for offering an engrossing perspective on the intense and high-pressure environment within Manchester’s divorce law scene.
The six-part series titled “Delicious” was developed by Ursula Rani Sarma, who expressed her excitement upon its unveiling, stating that she had admired the show “The Split” for years and felt privileged to be given the opportunity to create “The Split Up“.
What to Read Next
In simpler terms, she said it’s like a continuation with a fresh cast and setting, but it keeps the charm, comedy, and emotional depth from Abi Morgan’s initial series.
It’s an absolute joy and fulfillment for me, as a writer advocating for diversity, to have the opportunity to centrally feature a dynamic contemporary British Asian family led by exceptional women in a prime-time TV series.
Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama, mentioned: “Abi Morgan’s The Split is among our most cherished and frequently discussed dramas, a fan favorite, and The Split Up, written by Ursula Rani Sarma and set in Manchester, looks set to be equally captivating.
The “Divorce” is just as rich in joy, sorrow, and mystery as the original, introducing an extraordinary new family that you’ll grow to cherish.
Nonetheless, there’s been a bit of confusion about whether the show will indeed proceed, especially following news last year that questioned its continuation.
Here is the lowdown on where things stand.
Is The Split Up happening?
Fans will be pleased to know that The Split Up *is* going ahead after all.
After the series was first announced back in February 2024, it was reported by Deadline in September that the show had been put on an indefinite hold due to editorial concerns and the need to address any creative problems that had arisen.
On the other hand, they emphasized that the BBC had not wavered from its support for the show. In fact, as recently as April this year, Broadcast Now announced a return to normalcy, with production preparations underway, aiming for filming to commence in October 2025.
What will happen in The Split Up?
The show focuses on Kishan Law, a distinguished family law firm based in Manchester with a significant British-Asian high net worth clientele, and a well-earned reputation.
The summary states that they are widely recognized as the preferred choice among Manchester’s high-profile individuals, seeking their services due to their exceptional skill, honesty, and confidentiality.
As a gamer, I find myself standing on the precipice of uncertainty, as the destiny and enduring impact of Kishan Law’s existence teeters precariously. A long-buried family secret from our shared past has been unearthed, casting a shadow over both our professional and personal lives, causing chaos and upheaval that I can barely comprehend.
The series delves into the impact of parents’ aspirations, the factors binding families, and the revelations that can shatter them.
As of now, no casting decisions have been made and it’s uncertain if the show will merge with “The Split”. However, original series creator Abi Morgan mentioned last year that they have been discussing the possibility of bringing back some familiar characters.
As a fellow gamer, I totally get what you’re saying! It sounds like we’re discussing the same game here. I believe this upcoming sequel will definitely shine on its own, but it’s just awesome to have a dedicated fanbase from the original version. We can’t wait to see these familiar faces joining us in the new version of our game. Who knows what surprises await us!
Who is returning from The Split team?
During the running of the new series, there will still be consistency since the original creator, Morgan, is involved as an executive producer.
Following the triumph of “The Split“, it’s been delightful to witness “The Split Up” unfold under the skillful pen of lead writer Ursula Rani Sarma, breathing life into what viewers adore. Last year, she commented on a fresh legal family navigating their way in a novel city, tackling new court cases, and experiencing the enticing blend of professional and personal life.
This fresh set of characters finds themselves entangled in the complexities of love, wedlock, dishonesty, and separation, giving the story a unique spin. It resonates deeply with viewers who enjoyed the original series.
In the same capacities, Jane Featherstone, Lucy Richer (executive producers), Lucy Dyke (additional executive producer), and Sumrah Mohammed (producer) from “The Split” are all returning for this new project as well.
Production company Northern SISTER is producing, with SISTER having overseen The Split.
The Split Up is yet to confirm a release date, but will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
The latest print issue from Digital Spy, titled “Oasis – Live in ’25”, is available now! You can purchase it at your local newsstands or online for only £8.99.
