Valve unexpectedly announced the new Steam Machine on a typical Wednesday. Here’s a look at when it will be released, what’s inside, and other important details.
Valve has introduced the Steam Machine, a new device that combines the features of a gaming PC and a console. They also announced a few other exciting products for gamers. Here’s a breakdown of everything we currently know about the Steam Machine, including its technical specifications and when you can expect it to be released.
Steam Machine release date
The Steam Machine is expected to launch in early 2026, alongside other new Steam products like the Steam Frame VR headset and an updated Steam Controller.

Valve positions the Steam Machine as a gaming PC, and it is, in most senses of the word.
Valve says the Steam Machine is six times more powerful than the Steam Deck. It also uses SteamOS, just like the Deck, so it will feel familiar if you’re already a Deck user. If you prefer a different operating system, that’s no problem – Valve lets you install one on the Machine.
The Verified program will be changed to include compatibility with the Machine.
Despite its compact size – it’s just a six-inch cube weighing 2.6 kilograms – this device is surprisingly powerful. In fact, Steam jokingly suggests it’s small enough to hide under a banana!
As you’d expect from a gaming PC, it features customizable RGB lighting. The LED strip on the front can display a wide range of colors and effects, and can even be used to monitor things like download speeds.
The Machine is available in two versions: one with 512GB of storage and another with 2TB. Although you can’t add another SSD internally, it does have a fast microSD card slot, which is useful since new games require a lot of space. We appreciate you looking out for us, Valve (and thanks, Gaben!).
