What We Do In The Shadows star would do a spinoff "in a heartbeat"

As a long-time fan who has been following this hilarious vampire saga since its inception, I must confess that the final episode of What We Do In The Shadows left me with a bittersweet feeling. On one hand, six seasons of laughter and silliness have come to an end, but on the other, I can’t help but feel that we’re saying goodbye a little too soon.

As a die-hard film buff, I can’t help but express my feelings about the conclusion of the hilarious and absurd vampire sitcom “What We Do In The Shadows.” After six seasons filled with laughter and silliness, this beloved show has drawn its final curtains, and the cast is now looking back on the journey. Kayvan Novak, who brilliantly portrayed the warlord vampire Nandor the Relentless, shared his thoughts: “Six seasons! Honestly, I’m from the U.K., where eight episodes feel like the end of an era, but we pushed it to 61 episodes. It’s simply incredible!

In the series “What We Do In The Shadows,” Harvey Guillén portrayed Guillermo, Nandor’s patient familiar who spent most of his time hoping for vampirism and later sought a new direction in the final episodes. Despite being primarily comedic, the bond between Guillermo and Nandor imbued it with emotion. “The show has aimed to bring joy, and that’s our mission,” Guillén said to The Hollywood Reporter. “We provided an escape, and we did so for six seasons. It’s been a challenging decade; we needed a brief respite every now and then to enjoy this silly world of a documentary featuring vampires and their human familiar. Every half-hour episode offered just enough amusement to keep us coming back week after week. We were fortunate to offer such an escape for the audience.

Without a doubt, I’ll find this series hard to part with. In numerous aspects, it harkened back to the traditional format of sitcoms: it predominantly followed an episodic structure, characters seldom gained lasting wisdom, and humor and the cast were at the forefront. Interestingly enough, its theme revolving around vampires and frequent use of intricate costumes and action sequences was merely secondary.

The conventional structure of traditional sitcoms surprisingly aligns with a show centered around eternal vampires, as they remain unchanging. As Mark Proksch, the actor portraying energy vampire Colin Robinson, puts it, “A century from now, these fools will still be in their home repeating the same routines they’ve been doing for centuries. And I find that oddly comforting in a peculiar way.

That also means we could revisit the show for a spinoff or a revival sometime down the line, which Guillén is all for. “We’re open to a quick visit with these characters and these people, because we love the time that we spent together and and look forward to any possibility of spending more time together in the future.” He was even more explicit when talking to Collider: “I would like to revisit these characters. I would do a spin-off in a heartbeat.”

Beware SPOILERS for the What We Do In The Shadows finale below

Primarily, the dynamics among the vampire group remained largely unaltered. However, there was a significant shift between Nandor and Guillermo; their friendship and partnership deepened. Eventually, Nandor consented to let Guillermo address him using his real name, and they shared an unusual moment by sleeping together inside Nandor’s coffin.

Guillen stated that they ultimately became partners, as fans had hoped. This pairing was often depicted in art with homoerotic undertones over the past half decade, and Guillen acknowledges and appreciates this. However, what’s important to note is that they ended up together not just in a romantic or sexual sense, but in a deep, platonic friendship. This friendship demonstrates that men can care for each other deeply without it necessarily implying a romantic connection. The characters even shared a coffin, symbolizing an unbreakable bond, reminiscent of the traditional marriage vow “till death do us part.

The finale is garnering positive responses from viewers, ensuring the series remains a must-see in the future. Frankly, it seems that What We Do In The Shadows is wrapping up slightly prematurely; I would have appreciated additional seasons to explore further narratives and concepts. However, it’s better for the team to end on a high note rather than risk declining in quality over time. I can hardly fault them for wanting to exit at the pinnacle of their abilities.

Sure thing!
