What to Make of the Mysterious New Character in Yellowjackets Season 3

Yellowjackets delight in presenting fresh challenges for current survivors to handle within the current storyline. In the first two episodes of Season 3, now streaming on Paramount+ for Showtime plan subscribers before their Sunday broadcast at 8 p.m. ET on Showtime, Yellowjackets swiftly establishes new enigmas.

In episode 2, named “Dislocation”, an enigmatic figure chases Shauna (played by Melanie Lynskey). During a business meeting with Jeff’s (Warren Kole) prospective partners at a restaurant, Shauna takes a brief moment to visit the restroom. Inside the bathroom, she discovers a forsaken mobile phone, which is set to play “Queen of Hearts” by Juice Newton—a hint towards the teenage Yellowjackets’ unusual method of choosing their next meal, where they would draw cards and hunt down whoever picked the queen. It seems that the owner of this phone might be aware of the events that unfolded in the wilderness.

Is the new character an old Yellowjacket?

The narrative alternates between two sequences: One shows a growing suspicious Shauna repeatedly phoning the restaurant to press them for information about the phone’s owner, implying that someone may be stalking her. Simultaneously, there is a flashback to the past, where teenage Shauna (Sophie Nélisse) shares a first kiss with Melissa (Jenna Burgess). Prior to this moment, Melissa had been a minor character in the backstory without any significant storyline. However, her role seems to be developing, suggesting she might become a crucial ally or even romantic interest for Shauna as she navigates the grief of losing her son. The adult version of Melissa has not yet emerged in the present-day timeline.

It’s been confirmed that Hilary Swank will appear in a recurring role for Season 3 and could possibly portray the grown-up version of one of the teen characters, making her our top candidate for the character Melissa. However, since we haven’t received any updates about Melissa in the present, Shauna’s anxious response suggests they might not have ended their relationship amicably if she was indeed the one who left the phone.

The adult Yellowjackets may need to gear up for another showdown.
