Even after moving from Queen’s Park to South Harlesden following her divorce, Amanda Hughes is committed to giving her teenage kids a wonderful Christmas. This will be shown in a special festive episode of her popular comedy series, Amandaland, which airs on Christmas Day.
This involves a trip to the countryside to visit Aunt Joan, with Felicity, her hesitant mother, close friend Anne, and neighbour Mal. The episode marks the first time Joanna Lumley and Jennifer Saunders, stars of Absolutely Fabulous, have appeared together in a scripted TV show since the comedy series ended in 2012 – but this time, they play Felicity and Joan’s very different sisters.
Jennifer Saunders was thrilled to take on the role of Joan because she was a big fan of Amandaland. She fondly remembers watching the show when it first aired and immediately loving it. Even the trailer had made her laugh, and she described it as a hilarious show filled with funny moments, physical comedy, and memorable characters. She couldn’t imagine a better project to be involved with.
What to Read Next
She said the Christmas show script was really funny and featured a character she enjoyed portraying. She was also excited to work with Joanna again after a long time, which was a big reason she took the role.
Lumley described having Jennifer on the show as a real treat. She explained that they played characters very different from their famous roles as Edina and Patsy in AbFab. Everyone, especially Lumley herself, loved working with her, and it felt sad when filming wrapped and she left.

What time is Amandaland on TV tonight?
If all that has left you desperate to tune in, we’ve got all the details you need right here.
The 30 minute Amandaland Christmas Special is on BBC One on Christmas Day, 25 December, at 9.15pm.
Who is in the cast of the Amandaland Christmas special?
Lucy Punch returns as Amanda, along with Joanna Lumley as her mother Felicity.
The cast also includes Philippa Dunne as Anne, a close friend who often puts up with a lot, Samuel Anderson as Mal, who lives next door to Amanda, and Alexander Shaw and Miley Locke playing Amanda’s teenage kids, Manus and Georgie.
The cast also includes Jennifer Saunders as Joan, Felicity’s sister and Amanda’s favorite aunt.

Will there be a second series of Amandaland?
The first season of Amandaland was a big hit for the BBC, becoming their second most-watched new comedy launch recently – only surpassed by Ludwig. Because of its success, a second season was quickly greenlit, and filming started on October 21st.
Lucy Punch expressed her enthusiasm about beginning work on the second season of Amandaland, praising the show’s incredibly talented and wonderful cast.
Holly Walsh and Laurence Rickard, who co-wrote the show, said they were thrilled to be back filming in South Harlesden. They spent six months researching local council rules about illegal dumping, perfecting an Irish accent for one of the characters, and writing the script, and are now excited to start filming with the cast.
The first season dropped back in February, and if everything goes according to plan, I’m guessing we’ll see season two around the same time in 2026. Fingers crossed!
Who will be in the cast of Amandaland’s second series?
Lucy Punch, Samuel Anderson, Joanna Lumley and Philippa Dunne have all been confirmed to return.
So far, they haven’t announced anyone else joining the cast, but I’m really hoping Jennifer Saunders will come back as Aunt Joan – she’s amazing! And as a huge Motherland fan, it would be incredible to see Anna Maxwell Martin, Diane Morgan, or Paul Ready pop up as their characters and visit Amanda in SoHa for an episode. That would be brilliant!

Anna Maxwell Martin has expressed interest in revisiting her role in Motherland, suggesting she’d be open to a one-off special, like a sports day or party. In a recent interview with Closer Magazine, she praised the show’s success and her fondness for her co-stars, Lucy Punch and Philippa Flynn. While she felt the spin-off series was a good fit for her character and allowed for further storytelling, she believes Motherland concluded at the perfect time for everyone involved, leaving behind a successful and satisfying series.
Diane Morgan and Paul Ready probably won’t appear in Amandaland because they’re currently working together on a new BBC sitcom. Filming began in October for the show, currently called Ann Droid, which is set in 2029. Morgan plays Linda, a used android who moves in to care for an elderly woman (Sue Johnston) after her son (Ready) leaves home.
Amandaland airs on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
