What Task’s Gutting Episode 6 Death Means for the Series Finale

The sixth episode of *Task* opens with shocking deaths: both Lizzie Stover (Alison Oliver) and Robbie Prendergrast (Tom Pelphrey) are killed within the first 20 minutes. Robbie is stabbed by Jayson (Sam Keeley) and dies from his injuries while being driven to the hospital by Tom (Mark Ruffalo). Lizzie, who was deafened by a nearby gunshot, is run over by Jayson and Perry (Jamie McShane) as they escape the scene, having been released by Anthony Grasso (Fabien Frankel), a detective secretly working with Dark Hearts.

It was certainly a depressing opening to the episode, and things only got more tense from there.

After the shooting in Bushkill, the FBI investigated the task force, suspecting someone was secretly sharing information with the Dark Hearts. We now know this inside person was Grasso, who was originally placed in that role with the help of County Chief Michael Dorsey. While Lizzie’s death seemed to deeply affect Grasso, Dorsey instructed him to remain composed so they could both escape the situation without consequences.

Even though Maeve reported Sam to the police, she was also being questioned as a possible accomplice in his kidnapping. After hearing her explanation for not reporting him sooner, the district attorney initially wanted to charge her. However, Tom convinced her that a jury wouldn’t find Maeve guilty, and that charging her would leave Maeve’s children, Harper and Wyatt, without a caregiver. Maeve was released and returned home, and Tom kept his promise to Robbie by helping her, as she hadn’t been involved in any of Sam’s trouble.

Tom discovered from Maeve that Robbie and Cliff believed the drug deal in Episode 4 was happening at a different location than where the FBI planned their sting. Combined with Kathleen’s revelation of a past complaint against Grasso for similar problems with the Dark Hearts, Tom realized Grasso was the mole and confronted him. Though Grasso didn’t fully confess, Tom warned him, “I’m comin’ for you.”

Tom’s family situation is becoming increasingly complex. After visiting Sam at the juvenile detention center – a result of the local shelter losing funding and closing – Tom decided to use his foster parent status to bring Sam home. This surprised his daughters, Emily (Silvia Dionicio) and Sara (Phoebe Fox), who, as Sara noted, felt it wasn’t a good time to add another responsibility to their already full lives.

Just when you thought *Task* couldn’t get any more complicated, the sixth episode ended with a shocking twist. Jayson and Perry discovered the bag Robbie threw in the river contained real estate brochures, while Shelley – who was previously connected to Robbie and Cliff’s dangerous associate, Ray – unexpectedly arrived at Maeve’s door with the actual bag of money. It seems Robbie was counting on Shelley’s claim of being a good person and intentionally misled the Dark Hearts, hoping to secure a better future for Maeve and their children. However, Jayson and Perry are likely to suspect Maeve of having the money, potentially leading to another confrontation between the Prendergrasts and the Dark Hearts in the finale. Will Maeve take matters into her own hands and avenge her father and uncle?

As a huge fan of this show, I’m still left with so many questions as we head towards the finale! I’m really wondering how Jayson will react if he ever discovers Perry was the one who hurt Eryn. Will Grasso finally face the consequences of his actions? And I’m genuinely curious to see if Sam will end up living with the Brandis family permanently. But honestly, the thing I’m most anxious about is what’s going to happen at Ethan’s sentencing – everyone’s been talking about it!

Wrapping things up will be complex, but based on how creator Brad Ingelsby handled the finale of *Mare of Easttown*, he seems well-equipped to do it effectively.
