What Severance Episode 6 Could Mean for Burt and Irving’s Relationship

Although Irving (John Turturro) was dismissed in Episode 4 due to his innie’s actions at ORTBO, he doesn’t appear to be backing down from the mission he seems to be on, which involves infiltrating and potentially taking down Lumon. However, it looks like there might be more underhanded individuals in the outside world than Irving may have initially thought.

In Episode 6 named “Attila”, outgoing Irv kept his word and joined outgoing Burt (Christopher Walken) and his partner Fields (John Noble) for a dinner at their home. Initially, it appeared to be a cordial invitation; however, as the night progressed, the atmosphere became anything but tranquil. In fact, one could argue that the interaction between Burt and Fields was unsettlingly tense, a development which raises substantial questions about their connection with Lumon and their part in the broader Severance plot.

What’s the deal with Fields?

In the world of “Lord of the Rings,” fans might recall John Noble for his portrayal of Denethor, a self-centered and ambitious Steward of Gondor in “The Return of the King.” However, could this be the first time we’re seeing him in “Severance”? Or could there have been previous appearances?

In the final scene of Season 1, Arthur Brooks portrayed Fields, a quick appearance when innie Irv unexpectedly visited Burt’s house during the OTC. Some viewers speculate that Noble might have made an earlier appearance in the fifth episode of Season 2, hidden in the cold open. The enigmatic man, who mysteriously collected surgical tools from the O&D department and headed to the Exports Hall elevator, was intentionally unclear, but his description seems to align with what we know about Noble’s Fields. Given the events at this week’s dinner party, it wouldn’t surprise us if Fields were working with Lumon.

Is outie Burt evil?

As a movie enthusiast, I must admit that Burt and Fields appear to harbor some rather intense views concerning the connection between severance and Christianity, despite their claims of being non-fanatical. During a casual dinner conversation about Burt’s decision to get severed, Fields explained that they were part of a Lutheran congregation where it was taught that innies are autonomous entities with souls capable of independent judgment from their outies. Therefore, according to Fields, even though Burt was once a rogue in his youth, it means Burt’s innie could attain heaven and remain with him forever, while his outie might face eternal punishment.

The discussion between Burt and Fields eventually shifts towards their past habit of addressing each other as “hon”, which they later changed to “Attila” based on the historical figure Attila the Hun. This seemingly affectionate term, however, appears rather ominous when considering that Attila is known for his savage nature, earning the title “the Scourge of God”. Additionally, it’s worth noting that one of Attila’s most infamous actions was killing his own brother to seize absolute power. Considering what we know about Kier and his brother from the ORTBO, this mention of fratricide doesn’t seem accidental.

According to Burt, the name change incident occurred approximately a decade prior, but Fields asserts it was two decades ago. This discrepancy arises because, as Irving recalls, Lumon’s first severed office was opened just 12 years back. So, it’s possible that the person Burt referred to as his partner during their drink could have been none other than Lumon CEO James Eagan (Michael Siberry), suggesting Burt might have worked for Lumon longer than he initially suggested.

Burt swiftly ends the discussion on his Lumon history, yet a visibly upset and presumably intoxicated Fields erupts in a rant, revealing his genuine sentiments towards the bond between Burt and Irv. It’s evident that Fields harbors feelings of betrayal from Burt, and it appears this isn’t the first instance.

What does Lumon know about Irving?

As Irving is busy preparing dinner, we observe Mr. Drummond (Olafur Darri Ólafsson), the Lumon security chief, entering Irving’s home using a key ring that suggests he might have access to every employee’s residence at Lumon. He then opens Irving’s locked trunk and finds a list of employees who have been terminated, along with their contact details. He seems to pay special attention to Burt’s name and address.

The episode concludes with Irv and Burt bidding farewell, implying they’d like to meet again without Fields. This suggests that Burt’s connection to Lumon may be more complex than initially assumed. Given Irving’s history, however, it remains uncertain who is manipulating whom. Here’s to hoping that ‘outside’ Irv is playing a strategic game of chess, not just checkers.
