As someone who has followed Meryl Streep’s illustrious career since her early days, I must say that this year’s Emmy Awards left me a bit perplexed. It was heartening to see the legendary actress nominated for her role in “Only Murders In The Building,” but the comparison made by Rob McElhenney and Kaitlin Olson during their presentation felt like a missed opportunity.

On a recent Sunday night, even though she is renowned as one of Hollywood’s top acting talents, Meryl Streep was still drawn into unfavorable comparisons.

At the start of the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards held at the Peacock Theater in LA, the Academy Award-winning actress, now 75, was present. A humorous skit showcasing her on-screen abilities was performed.

Discussing the honor for exceptional performance by a comedic series supporting actress, where Meryl Streep was recognized due to her part in Only Murders In The Building, Rob McElhenney and his spouse Kaitlin Olson likened her acting ability to a sports supporter’s garment.

Friends and colleagues, today we gather to acknowledge the humor that keeps us all together. These performances provide essential strength during challenging times,” said McElhenney as he announced the nominees.

Joining the conversation, Olson humorously remarked: “Just as a jockstrap, it seems your description closely resembles that of a jockstrap.

McElhenney exclaimed, “It doesn’t!” and further explained, “These roles are crucial for keeping everything in place, without them the entire structure collapses… you know, it’s like a jockstrap.

As the camera shifted focus to Streep seated beside Martin Short in the crowd, Olson quipped playfully: ‘Are you actually referring to Meryl Streep as a sports supporter’s accessory?’

‘No! I’m so sorry Meryl,’ he said, feigning upset

Simultaneously, Streep seemed taken aback as she glanced down at her own lap, whispering “Oh my goodness” in a dramatic fashion.

In the end, Liza Colón-Zaya was triumphant in winning the award due to her exceptional performance in The Bear. Notably, she outshone Meryl Streep, Carol Burnett, Hannah Einbinder, Janelle James, and Sheryl Lee Ralph to secure this prestigious honor.

Nevertheless, opinions about McElhenney and Olson’s scripted joke were split, with some sharing their thoughts on X (previously known as Twitter) late in the evening.

One user commented, ‘The author of the Emmy Awards tonight remains unknown, but the dialogue is incredibly awkward. They even likened Meryl Streep to a sports protective undergarment, and believe me, it’s as cringeworthy as it sounds.’

While a second added: ‘Meryl Streep reacting to being called a jockstrap was amazing.’

Elsewhere, a  third posted: ‘I can’t believe @RMcElhenney just called Meryl Streep a jockstrap.’

At the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, which boasted a glamorous red carpet, Hacks surprisingly defeated The Bear to claim the top comedy prize in an unexpected upset. Meanwhile, Shogun broke records by dominating all drama categories.

At the awards ceremony held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, the HBO comedy starring Jean Smart (who won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series) and Hannah Einbinder emerged victorious in the category of Outstanding Comedy Series, beating out the FX series.

During this time, Shogun surpassed the previous record for a single television season with 18 episodes. The show not only received the prestigious award for Outstanding Drama Series, but also awards for Outstanding Lead Actress (Anna Sawai) and Outstanding Lead Actor (Hiroyuki Sanada).

In the categories of limited or anthology series, it was Baby Reindeer on Netflix that won Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series. Additionally, Richard Gadd received Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series, while Jessica Gunning earned Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series.

The current event occurred slightly under a year following the 75th installment of the program, initially scheduled for September 2023, but postponed to January 2023 due to writer and actor strikes.
