What Joe Keery learned from Cold Storage co-stars Lesley Manville and Vanessa Redgrave

Even though Stranger Things just finished airing its final season last month, fans of Joe Keery don’t have to wait long to see him again! He’s starring in Cold Storage, a new sci-fi comedy-horror movie coming to UK cinemas next Friday.

Based on David Koepp’s novel, the film stars Joe Keery and Georgina Campbell as coworkers at a storage unit. When a tiny organism is released, they unexpectedly become potential saviors of humankind, facing a threat that could wipe everyone out.

Despite being described by critics as wildly chaotic and filled with over-the-top gore, the film actually features acclaimed actors like Liam Neeson, Lesley Manville, and Vanessa Redgrave in supporting roles.

In an interview with Digital Spy before the release of Cold Storage, Keery shared that he learned a lot from working alongside such well-known actors, and he made a point of absorbing their experience.

He noted that being around these people and observing them was insightful. He was struck by how at ease they appeared, and how passionately they defended their creative choices. He specifically highlighted Vanessa as someone who confidently and respectfully shared her many ideas, serving as a strong example of this approach.

These actors consistently elevate the films they appear in, and that’s a quality I really admire.

Campbell agreed with her colleague, explaining that working alongside talented actors is a valuable learning experience. She said, “Just being able to work with them and watch them, you always get to learn.”

Beyond offering valuable career insights, the show Cold Storage gave the lead actors a chance to reflect on their own career beginnings and early work experiences. Both actors played characters stuck in jobs they needed for practical reasons, but wouldn’t have picked for themselves.

I filmed bodybuilding competitions in high school as part of the stage crew, setting up lights and sound. I remember it being a strange experience – the empty school and these incredibly fit bodybuilders walking around while I focused on the technical aspects of the lights.

Campbell recalled a time when he worked at Gap during university. He’d actually hope to be assigned to the changing rooms because they offered a bit of privacy – he could listen to music or check his phone without getting in trouble with his boss.

Thankfully neither job saw them fighting to save the world from a deadly organism, at least.

Cold Storage is released in UK cinemas on 20 March, and is out now in US cinemas.
