What Gates McFadden would like to explore if she returns as Dr. Beverly Crusher

As a long-time Star Trek enthusiast who grew up watching Captain Picard navigate the final frontier alongside Dr. Beverly Crusher and Wesley Crusher, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgic excitement at the prospect of Star Trek: Legacy.

In the realm of Star Trek, it’s seldom definitive that an actor won’t reappear in a series again. There’s always room for creativity and flexibility to revive characters, even those seemingly gone forever, which is part of what makes science fiction so appealing.

As a dedicated Star Trek fan, I must say, the third season of Picard truly outdid itself by resurrecting characters we last saw over two decades ago, such as Data, who was presumed dead. The season’s success underscores the enduring love fans have for these characters since 1987. It’s no wonder there’s such a clamor for Star Trek: Legacy – a fresh series that centers around Captain Seven of Nine [Jeri Ryan], and promises to revisit our beloved legacy characters, even if not on a regular basis.

Gates McFadden expressed her readiness to reprise the role of Dr. Beverly Crusher during a recent interview with TrekCentral. Despite a satisfying storyline for her character on Picard, there are still many aspects of her persona and relationships with her sons yet to be delved into. While fans didn’t get a Wil Wheaton/McFadden reunion in Picard, Star Trek: Prodigy provided a brief opportunity for that in its second season.

McFadden’s primary focus seems to revolve around her role as a single mother to her children, as she expressed in the interview: “I believe there was not enough exploration of how the character navigates her sons. I have personal experience with single parents and know that they play a significant role in guiding their children through life’s major decisions.

After Wheaton departed from Star Trek: The Next Generation, there was no further scene depicting the relationship between mother and son until Prodigy, but it didn’t last long. In truth, there wasn’t a strong emphasis on their mother-son bond aboard the Enterprise initially. However, it could be improved with some dedicated time spent between Dr. Crusher and her sons.

Legacy is one of the many reasons why such a series is essential for the franchise.
