What dragon is in the Vale in House of the Dragon? (Sheepstealer explained)
As a passionate fan of “House of the Dragon,” I am thrilled to witness the exciting developments in the ongoing Targaryen civil war saga. The sixth episode of season 2, “Smallfolk,” brought us closer to George R.R. Martin’s intricately woven world, with new alliances, unexpected romances, and more dragons gracing our screens.
As a gamer, I’m excited to share my perspective on the latest episode of “House of the Dragon” season 2, titled “Smallfolk.” In this thrilling installment, we delved deeper into the Targaryen civil war, introducing new alliances, love stories, and even more dragonriders. Based on the sneak peek for Episode 208, it seems that dragons will continue to play a pivotal role in the series. I can hardly wait as Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) prepares to expand her dragon fleet, an essential plotline from George R.R. Martin’s book “Fire & Blood” known as the Sowing of the Seeds. Finally, we get to witness this captivating moment on screen!
Despite the majority of dragons dwelling on Dragonstone, it’s important to note that hidden gems could exist in remote areas of the map. In “Smallfolk,” Rhaena, Rhaenyra’s step-daughter (played by Phoebe Campbell), came across an unexpected discovery: a dragon residing in the Vale. Accompanied by young Prince Joffrey, they stumbled upon a scorched patch of land and sheep remains. Later, during a confrontation with Lady Jeyne Arryn (Amanda Collin), Rhaena uncovered that this wild, formidable dragon had established its lair in the Vale and defied all efforts to tame it.
In the upcoming events of “House of the Dragon,” it appears that Rhaena is being set up for an encounter with a dragon. The specific dragon is yet to be revealed. Proceed with caution, as this information may contain spoilers from “Fire & Blood.”

Sheepstealer is here to chomp up your sheep in House of the Dragon
As a gamer, I can’t wait to discover which dragon resides in the Vale during gameplay. In the books, there’s a wild dragon called Sheepstealer that fits the bill perfectly. Isn’t that an imaginative name? The people of Westeros certainly know how to come up with descriptive monikers for their dragons.
In the text, the dragon named Sheepstealer resides on Dragonstone, feeding on the nearby sheep herds in a similar manner. This large, unattractive dragon with a mud brown coloring is infamous for consuming sheep (and occasionally sheep dogs) among the islands surrounding Dragonstone. Sheepstealer emerged during the early rule of King Jaehaerys the Wise, making it older than dragons such as Syrax and Aegon II’s Sunfyre but not yet reaching the grand age of dragons like Vermithor or Vhagar.
Intriguingly, Rhaena does not train the dragon Sheepstealer in the story; rather, it is a character named Nettles who climbs aboard. Nettles, a humble commoner, wins over Sheepstealer by frequently offering him his favorite food – sheep. Over time, Sheepstealer comes to view Nettles as harmless because of her consistent acts of kindness and acceptance of her as his rider.
In simpler terms,
It’s a safe guess that we’ll uncover new information about Sheepstealer when Episode 207 of “House of the Dragon” airs this coming Sunday on HBO and Max.
