What does Prue Leith believe is the biggest difference between baking in the UK and US

As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for all things culinary, I must say that Prue Leith’s insights into the world of baking are nothing short of delightful. Her illustrious career spanning both sides of the pond has given her a unique perspective on the art of baking and its regional nuances.

We all know that Prue Leith is one of the queens of baking or at the very least, she is one if its most interesting judges. As a judge on both Great British Menu and Great British Bake Off (known as the Great British Baking Show in the US), she has proven time and time again that she understands not only how to put together a delicious meal, but also how to bake an amazing sweet treat.

Given Leith’s widespread fame across the U.S. and the U.K., stemming from shows like “The Great British Bake Off” and “The Great American Baking Show,” it’s understandable that we’d be curious about her insights on baking. In a recent chat with Delish, she was queried about the significant differences she’s observed regarding baked goods between the U.S. and the U.K.

She mentioned that the disparities aren’t too significant, but there are still a few notable aspects to consider.

Leith highlighted an interesting observation: “Babka, for instance, is often associated specifically with New York, reflecting its unique American identity.” This is understandable since certain delicacies may not be universally recognized or may vary significantly due to cultural adaptations within the United States.

As she continued our chat, she highlighted an interesting fact – the noticeable variations in the level of sweetness between goodies from the U.S. and the U.K. I found myself intrigued by this revelation as a gamer who occasionally indulges in treats from both sides of the pond.

From a flavor point of view, the chief difference is probably that you guys like a bit more sugar than we do, and you like a bit more frosting on top. We’d put a smear of frosting, and you’d put an inch of frosting.

It’s quite logical, isn’t it? Given that Americans generally have a sweet tooth, it doesn’t come as a shock that our culinary practices and products, particularly those involving sugar, would differ significantly from other regions. Prue Leith bringing this to our attention isn’t nearly as surprising as one might initially think.

What’s your take on Prue Leith’s response? Did you have a different expectation for the Great British Baking Show judge’s feedback?
