Fans of the show, Squid Game, have been captivated by the surprise appearance of a well-known Hollywood actor in the final episode.
On Friday (June 27th), I was excited to find myself back in the haunting world of the South Korean dystopian thriller as it returned for its final season on Netflix. Over these last six episodes, I got to see how the tale that captivated audiences in 2021 would come to a close.
In the final episode of the series, which was named ‘Humans Are…’, there was an unexpected appearance by Cate Blanchett. She showed up towards the end as a representative from the U.S. offering to recruit Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) for a game show.
Viewers of the show couldn’t help but be taken aback by Cate Blanchett’s unexpected appearance in the series, with one spectator exclaiming on X: “Spotting Cate Blanchett as the recruiter in Squid Game is hands down the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen!
Wow, I didn’t know that Cate Blanchett was part of Squid Game,” commented one spectator, with another asking: “Dude, is it true she retired from acting? This is so unexpected to see Cate Blanchett here! #SquidGameSeason3 #SquidGame3” (informal and conversational)
This idea was shared by another spectator when they exclaimed: “CATE BLANCHETT, WHAT ARE YOU INVOLVED WITH HERE? #SquidGame3,” and another user queried: “WOW, Cate Blanchett, could this be a hint at a #SquidGame spinoff series from a different nation??”
Or, more casually:
Someone else felt the same way and asked: “Cate Blanchett, what’s going on here in Squid Game 3? #SquidGame3,” while another user speculated: “Is this Cate Blanchett’s confirmation for a foreign #SquidGame spinoff series???
Although it’s uncertain whether Cate Blanchett’s role will impact David Fincher’s forthcoming English adaption of Squid Game, its creator Hwang Dong-hyuk discussed the rationale for Blanchett’s guest appearance, stating her presence as “hypnotic.
He explained to Tudum that they found it more captivating and suspenseful to have a woman in the recruiter role. As for their choice of Cate Blanchett, he said she’s simply exceptional with an undeniable charm. Who wouldn’t admire her? So, they were thrilled to have her join the team.
In our production, we were searching for an individual capable of commanding attention with minimal dialogue, and she effortlessly fulfilled that role… While filming, she brought to mind the essence of genuine talent. With only a handful of glances and dialogues, her acting was nothing short of captivating.
Seasons 1 to 3 of the popular series “Squid Game” can be found streaming on Netflix. Additionally, “Squid Game: The Challenge” is set to make a comeback for its second season.
