As a woman who has spent decades navigating the tumultuous world of entertainment, I find myself deeply disturbed by the ongoing saga surrounding Sean Combs, also known as Diddy or Puffy. Having worked in this industry for over three decades, I’ve seen firsthand how power and influence can be wielded to silence those who dare to speak out against the powerful.

Where’s the righteous celebrity outrage? The moral indignation?

For approximately two days now, Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs has been under arrest and facing accusations related to sex trafficking, forced labor, kidnapping, arson, bribery, and obstruction of justice.

The indictment also claims that he organized numerous events called “Freak Offs,” during which participants were reportedly drugged and coerced into having continuous sexual encounters for extended periods, resulting in injuries so severe they required weeks of recovery. These alleged acts date back to at least 2009.

However, isn’t it ironic when we consider an industry that frequently advocates for issues like equality, justice, diversity, and the protection of vulnerable individuals – including the #MeToo movement? Yet, when faced with its own accountability, it seems to take a different stance.

Nothing. A disgusting, disturbing, uniform silence.

Reminisce about the prominent stars who promptly shared their experiences or voiced support following the revelation of Harvey Weinstein’s conviction as a rapist: Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow, Salma Hayek, Charlize Theron, Emma Thompson, Julia Roberts, Meryl Streep, among many others.

A number of these women penned opinion pieces in The New York Times last year. They admired such activism greatly. It was particularly fashionable in 2018 to attend the Golden Globes wearing black, standing in solidarity with victims of Weinstein and mourning the careers he maliciously destroyed. These women asserted that they would not tolerate such systemic abuse any longer.

Outrage extended into boardrooms, politics, and fashion.

Hillary Clinton, having received funds from a disgraced film producer, made a statement commending those who bravely shared their experiences. In her words, “The bravery shown by these individuals, as well as the backing of others, plays a crucial role in preventing such behavior.

In a straightforward manner, Disney CEO Bob Iger expressed that the actions of Harvey Weinstein are despicable and have no place in contemporary society.

Vogue editor Anna Wintour: ‘appalling and unacceptable.’

Some well-known personalities, who had previously been associated with a long-term predator, have recently voiced their opinions on the matter. Although some may have done so to protect their careers and public images, they all made it clear that Weinstein is no longer acceptable, regardless of whether he’s found guilty or not.

However, when Cassie Ventura, the former girlfriend of Sean Combs who he assisted in launching her music career, courageously filed a lawsuit against him in November, a move that potentially endangered her personal safety, there was hardly anyone who supported her.

Among her accusations: Persistent beatings, such as one in January 2009 following an incident where Combs found Ventura conversing with a music manager at a party in L.A.: ‘[Combs] became furious . . . In the car departing the club, Mr. Combs attacked Ms. Ventura, shoving her into a corner of the vehicle and stomping on her face. . . [she] was severely bleeding, and was escorted into Mr. Combs’s residence, where she began vomiting due to the brutal attack.’

Initially, Combs refuted all allegations until recently-released surveillance footage from a 2016 incident at a Los Angeles hotel exposed the truth: Cassie, trying to flee what is now clear was a ‘Freak Off’, saw Combs pursuing her in nothing but a towel. He then seized her by the neck, pushed her to the ground, and repeatedly kicked her as she lay there helpless, over and over again.

This is what he did in public. Imagine the atrocities he may have been capable of in private.

A year ago, it was remarkable how everyone seemed to remain silent about the situation involving Combs. No celebrities or colleagues stepped forward to vouch for him, to argue that such brutality was impossible on his part, suggesting instead that Ventura’s accusations might have been motivated by money or revenge from a spurned woman.

One would be safe to assume, as was the case with Weinstein, that people knew.

Nevertheless, consider the prominent hip-hop figures and well-known companions who have remained largely silent on the matter: Jay-Z and Beyoncé, Rihanna, New York City mayor Eric Adams, who is known for his nightlife scenes, even bestowing a key to New York City upon Combs last year. However, he rescinded this key just three weeks after the Cassie video surfaced.

In the ’90s, Jennifer Lopez was romantically linked to Combs and was detained alongside him over a 1999 nightclub shooting incident that resulted in one individual having a piece of a bullet lodged in their facial area. However, to this day, Jennifer Lopez has remained silent on the matter.

She received an invitation for his 50th birthday party in 2019, along with Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner, Post Malone, Cardi B and Offset, Kevin Hart, Mary J. Blige, Pharrell, Kanye West, Naomi Campbell, Lil’ Kim, Usher, The Weeknd, Janelle Monáe, Queen Latifah, Snoop Dogg (our country’s representative to the 2024 Paris Olympics), as well as Jay-Z and Beyoncé.

None of these people knew? Where’s his pal Oprah?

This was Combs interviewed by Andy Cohen on ‘Watch What Happens Live’ in 2018.

Cohen: Hey, what do you think of Oprah for president?

Combs: I love that.

Cohen: You’ve known her well for a long time.

Combs: Yes.

In more casual terms, it can be expressed as: Ashton Kutcher, who infamously defended Danny Masterson, a convicted serial rapist, is a longtime friend of Combs. During an episode of ‘Hot Ones’ in 2019, Kutcher was questioned about this topic.

‘I’ve got a lot I can’t tell’, Kutcher said.

I’ll bet.

Back in December 2019, Beyoncé shared a birthday tribute for ‘Diddy’ on her Instagram. The image she posted showed her spouse and Combs sitting on a couch, both covering their mouths. Remarkably, this heartfelt post is still visible on her account today.

How might this action be perceived by other victims of Combs, whom U.S. District Attorney Damian Williams is confident will step forward?

Every celebrity in a position to help here should do so.

To date, just two notable figures in hip-hop culture have expressed their opinions: 50 Cent, who is currently producing a Netflix documentary focusing on allegations against Combs, and Eminem, who has penned songs suggesting Combs’s possible connection to the murders of Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls.

In the thrilling new album “Fuel — Shady Edition,” Eminem rhymes: “Will he ever take responsibility, found guilty, or keep evading? – Oh, such a mystery, never confessing to his crimes, one can only wonder how many lives he’s taken.

50 Cent (Curtis Jackson) stated in July that Combs frequently misrepresents facts.

He declared that he has consistently spoken against attending Puffy’s parties and such behavior, adding, “For years, I’ve avoided getting involved in stuff like that.” Furthermore, he expressed his frustration by saying, “It seems like they allow him to act without consequences.

Everyone knew.

On Wednesday, a second federal judge declined to release Combs on bail. He will stay in custody until his forthcoming trial.

In the meantime, his legal team is accusing the female accusers instead. Notably, Marc Agnifilo, their main lawyer, had the audacity to suggest that they should be grateful for their interactions with Combs.

According to Agnifilo, Combs and Ventura were deeply affectionate towards each other. In the indictment, Victim-1 was identified as Ventura.

As a lifestyle guide, I’d rephrase it like this: “Ventura shared that he eventually wed the personal trainer who was initially introduced to him by Mr. Combs… Looking back, she acknowledges that she had an excellent relationship with Mr. Combs.

Such appalling misogyny is what enabled someone like Combs to continue unchecked for such a prolonged period. For a long time, we’ve been told that ‘inaction is as harmful as aggression.’

As a lifestyle guide, I’d like to pose this question: Who among the influential figures in the realms of hip-hop, politics, and fashion – those with a voice that resonates – will now advocate for these victims, lending their platform to the cause of justice and change?
