What a comeback! KIIS FM's dumped presenters Jason Hawkins and Lauren Phillips get the ultimate revenge by topping Melbourne radio ratings

As someone who has been a devoted listener to radio for decades, I must say that the recent radio ratings have been nothing short of exhilarating! The tale of Jase and Lauren, two dedicated broadcasters who were unceremoniously axed from KIIS FM last year, only to rise like a phoenix from the ashes on rival network Nova FM, is the epitome of triumph over adversity. Their comedic chat show, now crowned Melbourne’s most listened-to breakfast program, has given me endless entertainment and proves that persistence truly pays off.

Previously let go from KIIS FM, Jason “Jase” Hawkins and Lauren Phillips achieved sweet vengeance, securing the top spot in Melbourne’s radio rankings.

Last year, their breakfast show in Melbourne got the chop to let Kyle Sandilands and Jackie ‘O’ Henderson expand from Sydney into our beloved city. I was absolutely gutted as a die-hard fan!

In the midst of fierce competition, The Jase and Lauren Show, now broadcast on competitor station Nova FM, has been recognized as Melbourne’s most popular morning radio show.

In simple terms, the comedy talk show has won the top position in this year’s fifth radio ratings survey by GFK, which was recently announced.

Jase and Lauren’s well-liked show saw an increase of 0.3 points and now commands a 9.9% audience share, putting it comfortably ahead of competitors The Kyle and Jackie O Show.

On their debut in Melbourne on April 29th, Kyle and Jackie O experienced a substantial drop in popularity, holding a 6.1% audience share. This made them the fifth-most tuned-to breakfast radio program in the city.

Despite being newcomers, Kyle and Jackie O managed to slightly increase Melbourne’s ratings, climbing from 5.9% to 6.1%.

In the ratings race, Fox FM’s duo Fifi, Fev, and Nick came in second with a 9.6% share of listeners, while Christian O’Connell on Gold FM took the third spot.

In April, Kyle and Jackie O moved their morning radio program to Melbourne as part of a significant, multi-million dollar agreement, leading to the termination of Jase and Lauren’s breakfast show on KIIS FM.

At that point, an unfazed Kyle stated that he didn’t particularly care about his rivals getting let go because in the end, it boiled down to who had the most listeners tuning in.

The individual stated, “Indeed, it doesn’t matter to us. Our choice to move to Melbourne was based on this: Jase and Lauren on KIIS FM have had a decent run, but they didn’t surpass fourth place in radio ratings. So, we decided to make the change.”

Even though The Kyle and Jackie O Show ranked lower in Melbourne, it still contributed significantly to KIIS FM retaining its position as the city’s most popular radio station.

Each week, the widely-appreciated breakfast program drew in approximately 750,000 listeners throughout Sydney, marking an increase of more than 50,000 listeners compared to the previous poll.

As a seasoned lifestyle expert like myself, Duncan Campbell, ARN Chief Content Officer, I proudly acknowledge the exceptional achievements of Kyle and Jackie O with heartfelt admiration. Their unparalleled success is truly commendable.

They consistently demonstrate why they are renowned as one of the top breakfast shows globally, drawing in approximately 1.24 million listeners weekly. Moreover, they have maintained their 45th straight survey position at the peak in Sydney and are exhibiting impressive expansion in Melbourne.

In Melbourne, their market share increase aligns with our expectations based on our internal data analysis. Expanding successfully into new markets takes time, but we’re optimistic about our long-term growth plan.

In other rating categories, Carrie Bickmore and Tommy Little achieved great triumph by securing the top spot for the best national drive-time radio show in Australia.

On the Hit Network, the duo Carrie and Tommy claimed an 11.1% slice of the audience share in Australia, marking their fourth consecutive victory at the top position, a remarkable achievement.

The duo expressed their thoughts on the outcomes as follows: “What luck we have with our dedicated, diligent team and exceptional listeners! They constantly inspire us towards astonishing accomplishments.”

“Appreciation to Australia for securing our number one position consecutively four times! Each day brings endless joy, especially during the afternoons, as we delight in connecting with listeners nationwide.”
