WGA warns writers not to work with Randall Emmett associate Steve Small
As a seasoned film enthusiast with over three decades of immersion in the intricate tapestry of Hollywood, I have seen my fair share of characters and controversies that make for compelling stories off-screen. The latest chapter unfolding revolves around Randall Emmett and his business partner Steve Small, who seem to be causing quite a stir in Tinseltown these days.
The Writers Guild of America advises its members against collaborating with producer Randall Emmett’s partner, Steve Small, due to allegations that employees and suppliers have faced difficulties receiving payment in relation to their work on recent movie productions.
The guild chose an uncommon action by adding Small’s company, Fifty Feet Movie LLC, which he manages, to its list of strike/unfair targets, following Small’s refusal to provide a guarantee bond for a film project, as stated in a WGA alert sent to members on Wednesday.
Since 2020, the Writers Guild of America (WGA) has included Emmett on their strike list due to his contentious reputation within Hollywood. The WGA took this step after it became clear that Emmett and his longtime business partner George Furla hadn’t paid writers for scripts they wrote in 2019 for an Arnold Schwarzenegger television series, which ultimately didn’t proceed past the planning stages.
The Writers Guild of America (WGA) is still trying to collect money and health benefits for their writers, as they were not paid by Emmett the sum of $711,765.57 that was due to four writers from the TV series ‘Pump’, according to a court judgment in Los Angeles. This amount includes compensation, pension, health contributions, and interest. The WGA made this announcement on Wednesday.
Currently, the guild is broadening its caution to encompass Small, an individual who’s collaborated extensively with Emmett over almost three years.
Small was not immediately available for comment.
According to the WGA, their guild’s work policies prevent members from taking jobs, negotiating options, or selling written works to businesses or persons who are currently striking or deemed unfair, as well as those not bound by the current MBA agreement.
1) Emmett is commonly recognized by TV viewers as the ex-fiance of “Vanderpump Rules” celebrity Lala Kent, and their tumultuous split in 2021, which was showcased on the successful Bravo series. In the world of Hollywood, he has gained fame for refining the “geezer-teaser” approach to producing action films featuring aging male stars, such as Bruce Willis before his retirement.
Previously, during the instances of writers’ and actors’ strikes, Emmett and Small successfully gathered film team members towards a movie production in Mississippi titled “Armored,” featuring Sylvester Stallone. Following the completion of filming in October, the crew faced a lengthy wait for their complete compensation, as The Times detailed in April. Eventually, most individuals received their payment after media outlets started contacting state film authorities.
On the day of filming “Armored”, Sylvester Stallone showed up on set without knowing that Emmett was the project’s director, according to four crew members who worked on the movie. However, neither Stallone nor his representatives chose to share their thoughts on this matter with The Times. Both the assistant director and another producer of the film stated that Stallone didn’t seem taken aback by Emmett’s presence on set.
On the Emmett film project in Cincinnati last spring, titled “Alarum,” which is due to be released in 2025 and helmed by Michael Polish, the crew members had expressed concerns regarding delayed wage payments earlier on.
Following an investigation by the Los Angeles Times in 2022, Emmett has persisted with his career in Hollywood, frequently appearing as “Ives” on production rosters and movie credits. Notably, “Ives” is Emmett’s middle name.
2022 marked the beginning of a new chapter for me, as I teamed up with Small to establish our fresh venture, Convergence Entertainment. Following the dissolution of my previous company, Emmett Furla Oasis, it was time for a change. Now, serving as president, Small and I have been steering this new ship since then. In the past three years alone, we’ve successfully produced at least four film projects, one of which is “Cash Out,” featuring the renowned John Travolta.
According to the Writers Guild of America (WGA), the latest project by Smalls, called Fifty Feet, had agreed to the previous year’s WGA contract with producers.
After finding out that they were considered financially irresponsible and unlikely to fulfill their MBA commitments related to several movie projects, the WGA requested a surety bond from Small and Fifty Feet.
“To date, Fifty Feet has failed to post a bond as required,” the guild said.
