WGA staff union says they’ve been stripped of healthcare amid strike

After seven weeks on strike, members of the Writers Guild Staff Union are losing their healthcare.

Generally, our staff receives the same health plan as members of the Writers Guild, through the Producer-Writers Guild of America Health Plan. Staff members who are part of the union and work at least 31 hours a week usually get monthly coverage. However, because the staff union—representing over 100 employees in areas like legal, communications, and residuals—is currently on strike, they’ve lost their eligibility for the plan.

The staff union said they found out about the loss of benefits through an online system only hours before the change took effect.

Disagreements among staff members within the Writers Guild of America West and the union itself have led to the cancellation of their Los Angeles awards ceremony.

The strike is now in its seventh week and is causing hardship for families and coworkers. The union believes this latest action by the WGAW is an attempt to undermine their efforts and end the strike, according to an Instagram post.

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) West announced that health coverage will end on April 1st for members who pay monthly for it. In a statement, the guild said striking writers can continue their health coverage through COBRA if they choose. However, the WGA won’t be able to fund coverage for staff members who didn’t work in March and therefore didn’t earn any income.

I’m really frustrated with this whole situation. We went on strike on February 17th because we felt like management wasn’t serious about reaching a fair contract. We started trying to negotiate back in September, but it feels like they just weren’t willing to work with us.

The staff union strike is happening at the same time as the Writers Guild of America (WGA) is negotiating a new contract with the major movie and TV studios. The WGA’s current contract ends on May 1st, and they’re aiming to get better healthcare, higher payments for streaming content, and stronger protections against the use of artificial intelligence. This is the first time the WGA has met with the studios’ negotiating group since both the WGA and the actors’ union, SAG-AFTRA, went on strike last year.

After a significant strike that brought Hollywood to a standstill almost three years ago, the Writers Guild is preparing to begin new contract negotiations with the major studios. Union leaders have stated they are determined to fight for what they believe in.

Union workers sent a complete proposal for a new contract to management last week, hoping it would end the current strike. However, management hasn’t agreed to the proposal yet. Key issues still being discussed include how layoffs and promotions are decided – specifically whether they should be based on seniority – and whether workers should have the right to strike during the contract period.

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) announced they’ve reached an agreement with their staff union that includes significant pay raises and strong protections for working conditions – benefits the WGA says are among the best offered to any union staff in Los Angeles.
