Wes Anderson’s new movie with stacked A-list cast gets hilarious first trailer that you need to see

Wes Anderson is preparing to make a comeback on the big screen with the unveiling of “The Phoenician Scheme“, a trailer for which features an ensemble cast, leaving viewers both puzzled and fascinated in roughly equal measure.

Known for his meticulous approach to filmmaking, this director has become synonymous with a unique style that stands out at first glance – envision a square screen ratio, soft pastel color schemes, and a dose of dark humor. Over the course of 12 movies, he’s consistently refined this signature style, even extending it to his work on Netflix’s adaptation of Roald Dahl’s tales.

The distinctive style that gained significant attention through TikTok fads a couple of years ago is particularly noticeable in the preview for “The Phoenician Scheme“.

Although the preview swiftly transports us into an undeniably distinct world of Wes Anderson, specifics about the film’s narrative remain sparse (at last, a teaser that leaves some mystery intact!).

Ahead of its May release, here’s what we know about Anderson’s 13th feature film.

The movie titled “The Phoenician Scheme” features Benicio del Toro portraying the role of Zsa-Zsa Korda, a man of immense wealth across Europe, known for his daring and risky behavior.

The trailer reveals that Korda has lived through more than a dozen airplane accidents, sustained multiple injuries, accumulated vast wealth, and is now prepared for what may be his last assignment.

He is resolute about bequeathing his property to one of his children, his estranged daughter Liesel (Mia Threapleton), who has taken the vows and is now a nun.

In the trailer, the father-daughter team embarks on a dangerous journey, battling against wealthy competitors and high-ranking officials in the imaginary nation of Phoenicia, as they strive to protect Zsa-Zsa’s development project from being halted.

In true Anderson fashion, Threapleton and del Toro are joined by a starry ensemble.

Amongst the talented cast in this project, I’m fortunate to see some familiar faces who are not only returning actors but also close acquaintances of the writer-director. Names like Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, Rupert Friend, Jeffrey Wright, Richard Ayoade, and Benedict Cumberbatch (just to name a few) populate the roster, making me all the more excited to be part of this exciting endeavor!

In this production, known as “The Phoenician Scheme,” both Michael Cera and Riz Ahmed make an appearance. It’s their debut collaboration with the director.

The Phoenician Scheme is released in cinemas on May 23.
