Were the first few seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation that bad?

As a gamer who’s spent countless hours navigating the vast cosmos of Star Trek: The Next Generation (TNG), I can confidently say that my journey wasn’t always smooth sailing, much like Captain Picard’s first few years commanding the Enterprise.

Star Trek: The Next Generation served as the foundation for the current evolution of the franchise, giving birth to two shows with similar themes, a series set before it, a film series, and a direct sequel almost three decades later. This iconic show in science fiction and Star Trek lore was initially riddled with issues that many overlook today.

As a dedicated gamer, I must admit that the early seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation didn’t quite resonate with fans like we hoped they would. However, it wasn’t until season three that we started seeing some truly remarkable episodes. It’s easy to say that the first few seasons were less than stellar, but were they as terrible as people claim? I think there’s room for debate on that.

Long story short, yes.

Based on the current data available, we can sketch a fairly accurate picture of how the initial seasons are perceived by fans today. Although we cannot determine the exact feelings of the fanbase when these seasons initially aired, it’s safe to say that this is their current viewpoint.

From its first season onwards, viewers on Rotten Tomatoes rated it with a 71% average based on numerous reviews. However, since critics have just a few dozen reviews, their scores aren’t reliable enough for our purposes. Meanwhile, let’s examine how episodes were graded by IMDB users. Generally speaking, this season was met with indifference or disapproval, with many episodes scoring around 6.0. Interestingly, only one episode managed to score an 8.0 or higher.

In the second season, there were both improvements and setbacks. The audience’s appreciation on Rotten Tomatoes increased to 78%, but critical acclaim dropped sharply to 57%. However, the IMDB ratings showed some recovery. Although the season had its ups and downs, with an episode that is considered one of the worst in TNG history, it still boasted more exceptional episodes than the first season. Remarkably, four episodes from the second season scored 8.0 or higher, with a few even reaching 9.0 at the time of the initial release.

In the third installment, there was a significant turnaround in quality. This season garnered a perfect score from critics and a near-perfect rating of 95% from fans on various platforms. Impressively, eight episodes scored an impressive 8.0 or higher, with some even reaching as high as 9.0. Contrastingly, the second season concluded with one of its lowest-rated episodes, Shades of Grey, while the third season finale, Best of Both Worlds Part 1, was among the highest-rated.

Sure thing! Subjective terms like “best” and “worst” can differ greatly among viewers, so if you enjoy the initial seasons of The Next Generation, that’s terrific! However, based on our findings, it seems those early seasons might not measure up to the series’ overall best moments. Enjoy watching!
