Video games first appeared in the late 1940s, but they didn’t become popular until the 1970s. By the 1980s, gaming was a huge industry, and by the 1990s, games were competing with movies and television for people’s attention. While technology has improved a lot since then, many gamers still consider the 1980s to be the golden age of gaming.

Video games are more popular than ever in the 2020s, rivaling and even surpassing TV and movies in their reach. We’ve seen incredibly successful games like Elden Ring and Baldur’s Gate 3 released recently, with highly anticipated titles like GTA 6 coming soon. While the industry appears to be thriving, there’s a growing concern that it could face significant challenges and a potential downturn.

Video Game Hardware Is More Powerful Than Ever

Early video game consoles weren’t very advanced, even compared to the computers of the same era. Computers like the TI-99/4A and Commodore 64 were much more powerful and could accurately recreate arcade games like Pole Position. However, porting those same games to a console like the Atari 2600 required significant simplifications and compromises.

Around the late 1980s and early 1990s, things started to improve as technology allowed arcade-style games to be played on home consoles. Games became much more sophisticated, particularly visually, and each new console felt like a significant upgrade. The difference between PC gaming and consoles used to be large, but the hardware is now much more similar. Modern consoles are incredibly powerful – they’re essentially high-end gaming computers.

Recent technological improvements have opened up incredible possibilities for game development, allowing for experiences that were previously unimaginable. Even portable devices like the Steam Deck can now smoothly run demanding games like Elden Ring and Diablo IV. This powerful hardware has driven exciting advancements in gaming, letting developers create immersive worlds and complex gameplay, something that was difficult to achieve in the early days when games were limited by technology and often lacked substantial storylines.

The original Grand Theft Auto games were quite simple, with straightforward gameplay and minimal story. Any narrative elements were presented in short, basic cutscenes. Grand Theft Auto 3 marked a huge leap forward, introducing a vast open world, and the series has continued to evolve and become more complex ever since.

Today’s games offer players incredibly rich experiences. They provide greater freedom, more activities, and deeper stories. Graphics are also stunningly realistic – some games look almost like watching a film or TV show. These advancements have helped gaming gain respect, transforming it from a pastime often associated with children into a massive, multi-billion dollar industry enjoyed by people of all ages.

Video Game Prices Are Rising At An Alarming Rate

Traditionally, technology has become cheaper over time, making video games more accessible. But this trend hasn’t held true in the 2020s. Despite the Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 being available for five years, prices have actually gone up. While the expensive parts needed to build these consoles justify the higher prices to some extent, it’s still frustrating for gamers.

A more significant problem today is how expensive new video games have become. While games weren’t cheap in the 1990s, stores like Blockbuster let people rent them, making it affordable to try new titles. Even more recently, throughout the 2000s and 2010s, buying used games was a popular way for players to save money and still enjoy the latest releases.

These days, it’s hard to find places to rent games, and most people buy them online instead of as physical copies. This means buying used games isn’t as popular anymore. With new games like Mario Kart World costing as much as $80, many gamers are starting to feel like the hobby is becoming too expensive.

Game prices have gone up partly because games take longer and cost more to make. However, gamers have a limit to how much they’ll spend on new releases. Research indicates that while there are many excellent games available, only a small number of players are actually experiencing them. The gaming industry is now largely supported by its most dedicated fans.

The Video Game Industry Is Sick

Throughout the 2020s, the gaming industry has been struggling with high prices for games and consoles. We’ve seen well-known game studios close down or lay off large numbers of employees. To make more money, many companies are using aggressive tactics and controversial strategies, and the increasing use of AI-created content in games is also worrying players.

Big-budget AAA games are facing significant challenges. While some independent games, such as the highly anticipated Hollow Knight: Silksong, are still thriving, the gaming market is becoming crowded, making it increasingly difficult for new games to gain attention. For every unexpected success story like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, there’s another game that gets cancelled or fails to perform well, even with positive feedback.

The gaming industry is increasingly driven by profit, and high prices for games and consoles are just one sign of this trend. Nintendo is a prime example: its new Switch 2 console costs about the same as the more powerful Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5. Beyond the initial cost, Nintendo is also being criticized for charging extra for upgraded versions of existing Switch games and for putting content in games like Pokémon Legends: Z-A behind paywalls, essentially making players pay more to access everything.

Gamers have more great options than ever before, with tons of fantastic games released in recent years across all kinds of genres. However, the gaming industry seems unsustainable. Rising prices and questionable practices are creating problems, and if things don’t change, gaming could face a serious decline.
