We’re not getting a Sims 5 after all, so what is Project Rene?

We’re not getting a Sims 5 after all, so what is Project Rene?

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of Sims-playing under my belt, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions upon hearing the news about Project Rene. On one hand, I’m excited for the potential of a multiplayer Sims experience that could breathe new life into this beloved franchise. On the other, I find myself grappling with the reality that we might never see the long-awaited Sims 5.

Things are not as they seem with the Sims 5

According to a recent announcement from EA and Maxis, it appears that The Sims 5 will not be released as previously thought. Instead, what was believed to be the next installment in the series, Project Rene, is actually not a direct sequel but something new and different.

Instead, The Sims 4 will serve as the primary installment of the Sims series for as long as the franchise remains active. For a while now, the base game has been accessible to play without charge, and it’s expected to receive ongoing improvements and updates.

However, while it might feel like the Sims 5 has been ‘cancelled’ today, this isn’t true. Project Rene is still in development. So, what is the next Sims game going to look like?

What is Project Rene if not a sequel to The Sims 4?

Instead of replacing The Sims 4 with The Sims 5, it seems Project Rene will serve as an additional installment in the series, offering new features and experiences. Today, we learned more about its design from a recent blog post.

Here’s what was shared today.

Moving forward with the advancement of other thrilling initiatives within the Sims universe, Project Rene concentrates on creating opportunities for players to interact, bond, and exchange experiences as they explore a brand-new virtual realm together.

In Fall 2024, Rene will receive a private opportunity to test a brand-new multiplayer feature of our game, which delves into the concept of gathering with friends and other players at a common location. We’ll keep you updated on the game’s progress and key achievements as we move forward.

It implies that we’ll get a glimpse of Project Rene’s appearance quite soon. However, it’s uncertain whether participants in the playtest will have permission to share their gameplay or personal experiences.

Project Rene appears to be a multiplayer version of The Sims, taking place online. It’s unclear whether it will closely resemble The Sims 4 or adopt a new strategy altogether. This represents the second endeavor in creating an online Sims experience, as “The Sims Online” from 2002 didn’t manage to attract a large player base.

Will there ever be a Sims 5?

As a dedicated gamer, I was hoping for the next big leap with The Sims 5, but it seems like we might not be seeing it. In an interview with Variety, Kate Gorman, the vice president and general manager of The Sims franchise at EA, mentioned that they’re no longer developing new installments in the traditional sense, such as how Sims 1, 2, 3, and 4 have progressed one after another. Instead, it seems like they’re focusing on enhancing and updating their existing games, meaning we might be looking at more iterations of The Sims rather than a fresh start. This also means that if popular expansion packs like ‘Seasons’ or ‘Pets’ are re-released, we’d have to repurchase the DLCs.

When Variety asked Gorman directly if there would be a Sims 5, she said:

“It’s not ‘Sims 5’ as a replacement for ‘4.’

This implies that we’ll persist in delivering an immersive High Definition simulation, maintaining the quality expected from a top-tier game, but it doesn’t entail starting over or wiping out all your progress from ‘4’. Essentially, your hard-earned achievements in ‘4’ won’t be for naught.

As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but ponder about the future of this captivating world we’ve all come to love. It’s our shared history, our bond, our advancements. I yearn for continuity rather than a reset. The numbers in the games might change, but what remains constant is the journey.

Even though it may feel disheartening not to anticipate a Sims 5 anytime soon, we can look forward to regular updates and fresh content for The Sims 4 over several years. Excitingly, The Sims 4 will receive an significant base game update when the upcoming expansion pack “Life & Death” is launched in October.
