Wendy Williams’ family shoots down guardian over claims talk show host is ‘incapacitated’
As a seasoned observer of the ever-changing landscape of the entertainment industry, I must say that the saga of Wendy Williams is both heartbreaking and intriguing. Having spent years watching her command the stage with unparalleled charisma, it’s disheartening to see her life unfold in such a public and tumultuous manner.
According to an exclusive source within her family, Wendy Williams is currently clearer than she’s ever been before, in contrast to the assertion made by her guardian that her struggle with dementia has left her permanently disabled. This update comes from DailyMail.com.
In May 2023, the ex-radio host, aged 60, received a diagnosis of aphasia and frontotemporal dementia.
A year later, a diagnosis was given following the appointment of a legal guardian, who was tasked with managing both her financial affairs and health matters, as dictated by the court.
Last month, lawyers representing the guardian of the celebrity stated in recent documents that the individual, Williams, has experienced significant cognitive decline and is now irreversibly incapacitated.
The newest development unfolded during a court dispute concerning Wendy Williams’ tell-all documentary, “Where Is Wendy Williams?” This event sparked significant criticism when it was broadcast in February.
Contrarily, an insider from the family challenged the statement about William’s mental health and remarked: ‘She is clearer now than she has ever been during the guardianship, which appears to be a concern for certain parties.’
The intended exploration of Wendy Williams’ life during her podcast launch on Lifetime was met with controversy, as viewers witnessed disturbing footage of Williams consuming vodka in bed and experiencing panic attacks. This sparked a wave of criticism from fans.
Morrissey is now locked in a legal battle with the network over the documentary.
According to documents obtained by The US Sun last week, Morrissey’s legal team described Williams as a renowned performer who unfortunately developed early-onset dementia. This condition has led to significant cognitive decline and permanent incapacitation in Williams.
In January 2022, after noticing a concerning series of incidents related to Wendy’s wellbeing and finances, Wells Fargo chose an extraordinary course of action. They independently started a legal process called a guardianship proceeding in the Supreme Court of New York, located in New York County (referred to as ‘Guardianship Proceeding’). The purpose was to have a neutral third party appointed as Wendy’s financial manager.
In my commitment to upholding privacy, I advocated for the concealment of specific aspects related to Williams’ health, family connections, and financial status within the case documentation.
‘We respectfully request that the Court grant Plaintiff’s motion for limited redactions to protect non-public information from the Guardianship Proceeding that has been placed under seal by the court overseeing that proceeding.
Two months back, I had the privilege of conversing exclusively with DailyMail.com, where the cherished talk show host reassured me about her well-being. She also expressed strong criticism towards the documentary at that time.
In October, she stated, “Things are going great for me.” She added, “The documentary was disappointing. I’ve heard it’s been nominated for an award. Things couldn’t be better.
2022 saw New York attorney Morrissey appointed as her legal guardian, following Wells Fargo’s decision to freeze her accounts. This action was taken due to concerns about her mental capacity raised by her financial advisor at the time.
Back in March, there were claims stating that Williams was purportedly compensated with $100,000 per episode for her participation in the four-episode documentary series.
Concurrently, it came to light that William’s caretaker had initiated a lawsuit against the parent company of Lifetime, A&E Television Networks, accusing them of ‘overt exploitation’ in a manner described as ‘offensive’.
In October, Morrissey initiated a lawsuit that was temporarily hidden from public view, but later documents related to this case, which contained shocking allegations, were unveiled and studied by The Hollywood Reporter.
In simpler terms, the lawyer representing Williams’ guardian expressed to the court that it’s abhorrent to take advantage of a woman with a severe health issue who is adored by countless people both within and outside the African American community. Such unacceptable actions should not be tolerated.
According to THR, Morrissey stated that the talk show host was unable to give her consent, and the producers didn’t obtain it from her legal guardian before creating the content. (Paraphrased for a more conversational tone)
According to the lawsuit, Williams was deceived by the producers into believing that the documentary would enhance her positive public image and reputation.
In reply, A&E Networks contended that Morrissey was overstepping her bounds by attempting to modify and censor certain sections of the documentary.
In response, the U.S. international broadcasting corporation filed a lawsuit stating that Williams had already agreed to a talent contract before her mental capacity was allegedly impaired, as suggested by the guardian.
In simpler terms, the well-known network argued that creating a documentary about dementia isn’t illegal without a specific agreement. Consequently, regardless of whether a contract was formally signed, their actions wouldn’t be viewed as improper.
The media organization is taking legal action against Morrissey, claiming he tried to violate A&E’s freedom of speech protections under the First Amendment. This is based on Morrissey’s earlier lawsuit filed in February, where he attempted to prevent the initial documentary from being aired.
According to A&E, Morrissey compelled their production firm to counter ‘baseless accusations’ from the documentary.
TMZ’s report indicates that A&E contends in their lawsuit that Morrissey is attempting to prevent Williams from: ‘Exercising one of her last opportunities for self-expression, speaking truthfully to her audience, just as she had done throughout her career, which was characterized by frankness and unfiltered communication.’
Initially, Williams’ representative had strongly criticized the Lifetime documentary which they had contracted their well-known television client for.
Shawn Zanotti asserted that the show’s creators were responsible for the situation, claiming the TV legend thought they were producing a show about her return, but instead, it seemed more like a portrayal of her decline – a spectacle, as he put it.
2021 onwards, Zanotti, who serves as a publicist for Williams, shared her concerns about producing the four-part documentary with NBC News.
Speaking candidly, I found myself deeply troubled by the perceived exploitation of Williams during our collaboration. She believed our focus should have been on revitalizing her career rather than capitalizing on it. If she were here today, I am confident that she would express profound disappointment in how things unfolded.
It’s impossible for me to believe that she would find it acceptable to be viewed and perceived in such a manner.
She also told PEOPLE that she felt ‘lied to’ about it.
Although Zanotti initially suggested Wendy join the show, he later expressed regret saying, “I wouldn’t allow Wendy to risk her reputation and brand in such a manner. Given her iconic status, this isn’t the narrative we agreed upon, and I feel misled.
‘It’s so difficult for me to even watch. Wendy would be mortified.’
The long-running talk show “The Wendy Williams Show” aired its last episode in June 2022, with Wendy Williams not appearing on it for the first time in 13 years.
Earlier, she took a break from the show in 2021, initially intending it as a short-term leave, to handle some personal health concerns.
