Wendy Williams’ dementia test results surface amid bombshell new ruling in guardianship case

The latest developments regarding Wendy Williams‘ prominent guardianship occurred after she underwent a comprehensive medical examination that encompassed rigorous neuropsychological testing.

The once-popular talk show host, who recently emerged for a seldom public event to mark her 61st birthday, has resided at an upscale senior care center in New York City since a judge assigned her a legal guardian in 2022.

Following reports of concerns regarding her mental health and possible financial abuse from her bank, a court appointed a guardian to manage her personal and financial matters for her.

In 2023, Williams received a diagnosis of both frontotemporal dementia and aphasia. However, despite this, she firmly asserts that she is not disabled and wishes to be released from guardianship, arguing that she is being forced against her will.

The extensive medical and neuropsychological tests, along with various scans that included brain imaging, carried out in her recent health evaluation, led doctors to provide an opinion about Williams’ neurological state and diagnosis, as stated in the acquired legal documents by People on Tuesday.

As I delve into the details of this report, it appears that although the documents themselves do not specify, reliable sources suggest to me that the tests have indeed diagnosed Serena Williams with Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD) and aphasia.

In the given documents, Sabrina Morrissey, appointed guardian of Williams, is asking the court to prolong the guardianship by an extra three months, with the suggested termination date being November 5.

Additionally, the attorney mentions that challenges are anticipated, as several parties such as legal representatives of some family members, Williams’ former spouse, and others, have expressed their intentions to contest not only the guardianship but also the position of guardian held by Ms. Morrissey.

Approximately a month ago, the news emerged following observations of Williams and renowned lawyer Joe Tacopina at a restaurant in New York City. They indicated that legal action was impending.

The individuals who played a role in her imprisonment will face consequences, according to Tacopina’s statement to TMZ. This is undoubtedly the case.

He didn’t hold back, adding: ‘This guardian process is scary. She was misdiagnosed.’

Moving forward, we’re hopeful for justice, Tacopina stated. ‘Unfortunately, this procedure has taken an excessively long time, which is truly aggravating,’ he added.

Later, pointing at Wendy, he said, ‘Meet Wendy, the very same person with whom we’ve exchanged words for approximately half a year. You might recognize her as Wendy Williams from television. Like me, she needs care in a similar type of institution.’

This individual possesses clear mental command and is truly admirable. Yet, it saddens me deeply… This situation doesn’t call for my involvement; rather, it stirs up a cause within me.

Wendy burst out laughing as she exclaimed, ‘I’ve just celebrated my birthday and I’m still under a guardianship. Frankly, I can’t think of a clearer statement.’

Tacopina succinctly stated her immediate aim: ‘What I’m focusing on right now, what matters most, is bringing her home.’

He added, ‘Wherever home is… where she can come and go as she pleases.’

In 2022, Wendy was entrusted to the care of Sabrina Morrissey. And in a surprising court document filed in November, Morrissey asserted that Williams had become permanently disabled as a result of her ongoing struggle with dementia.

In March, Wendy decided on a daring step, opting for a new legal group to battle for her liberty and overturn the judicially mandated setup.

As a lifestyle guide, I’d rephrase that statement as follows: To ensure my freedom from a three-year long conservatorship, I’ve enlisted the services of Tacopina, the legal representative who recently worked with A$AP Rocky.

Since then, a #FreeWendy movement has gained momentum.

During an emotionally charged scene recorded in early April, Williams could be seen pounding on the facility’s window from inside, while protesters gathered below, vocally advocating for her immediate release.
