Wendy McMahon resigns from her CBS News post amid ’60 Minutes’ crisis

Wendy McMahon has decided to leave her position as president of CBS News and Stations due to differences in opinion about how the parent company is dealing with President Trump’s legal action against “60 Minutes.

McMahon stated in a memo to CBS News employees on Monday, “It’s evident that there is disagreement between the company and myself regarding the way ahead.” He further added, “Now seems to be the right time for me to depart and for the organization to advance under fresh leadership.

McMahon maintains a strong stance that the media company CBS News, owned by Paramount Global, should not negotiate the $20-billion lawsuit brought forth by Trump, alleging that an October interview with his potential 2024 rival Vice President Kamala Harris was manipulated editorially to benefit her presidential campaign.

The news magazine persists in providing rigorous reporting on the White House, as Paramount Global ponders a resolution to facilitate potential sale to Skydance.

The ongoing lawsuit poses a challenge for Paramount Global’s planned $8-billion acquisition by Skydance Media, with the dispute now being referred to a mediator.

McMahon’s departure is a sign that a settlement may be close.

Following McMahon’s departure, both CBS News President Tom Cibrowski and CBS Stations President Jennifer Mitchell will now report individually to the CEO of CBS, George Cheeks.

In the year 2021, McMahon became part of CBS. Her responsibilities encompassed managing their syndication division, local TV stations, and CBS News.

McMahon was recruited to the firm by Cheeks, who had previously overseen the ABC station group at Walt Disney Co. At that point in time, Cheeks was making efforts to streamline the company’s stations division, which had been struggling with management problems and the dismissal of its previous leader, Peter Dunn.

After that point, McMahon became one of Cheeks’ most relied-upon deputies, eventually assuming control over CBS News. However, her handling of CBS News’ coverage of the Israel-Hamas conflict displeased Shari Redstone, who holds a significant stake in Paramount.
