Wendell Pierce hated World Series Game 5: The ‘ugliness of humanity’ sent him home early
As a seasoned movie critic with a deep-rooted love for both cinema and sports, I’ve witnessed countless moments that have left me awestruck – but none quite like the chaotic spectacle at Yankee Stadium during Game 5 of the 2024 World Series.
Television personality Wendell Pierce shares that he’ll vividly recall Game 5 of the 2024 World Series, but unfortunately, it won’t be a pleasant memory to hold dear.
On Wednesday, actor Michael Kelly (known for “Jack Ryan” and “The Wire”) criticized the disruptive actions and bothersome fans during a baseball game at Yankee Stadium, where the Los Angeles Dodgers won in the late innings over the New York Yankees. In his tweets, he mentioned that he had to leave the game early due to some individuals allegedly throwing objects at him while conversing with a Dodgers supporter. He described this incident approximately two hours after posting an enthusiastic video about Game 5, expressing support for the Yankees and donning a cap bearing their emblem.
A 60-year-old resident from New Orleans expressed on Twitter that disrespectful, unpleasant individuals can spoil everything. They had a terrible experience to say the least. For them, the game and its associated experiences are meaningless now due to the appearance of human ugliness, effectively ending the essence of sports.
In his following posts, Pierce expressed disappointment towards unruly spectators who he believed attended the World Series match primarily to misbehave. He stated that these fans detract from the enjoyment of watching talented athletes such as Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole and Dodgers series MVP Freddie Freeman. To him, the game holds no significance because all he can recall are the annoying fans he had to steer clear of.
Pierce didn’t reveal additional information about the sports fans who were reportedly overly aggressive. He spoke up about the incident one day after a Yankees supporter was criticized for interfering with Mookie Betts during Game 4. Austin Capobianco, the Yankees fan involved in the altercation, admitted to The Times that he might have gone too far with his enthusiasm.
Before the game in the Bronx on Wednesday, the Dodgers had already established a 3-1 lead in the series. However, it seemed like they were returning to L.A. for a Game 6 as the Yankees scored frequently and early. But then, during an unbelievable top of the fifth, the Dodgers took advantage of mistakes and blunders by the Yankees, scoring five runs and erasing their 5-0 deficit. As Betts put it, it was a “crazy” scene.
As I sat there, my heart pounding in sync with the game, the Dodgers held a slim 7-6 lead heading into the ninth inning, making it anyone’s ballpark. In an unexpected turn of events, none other than Walker Buehler, our starting pitcher, stepped up to the plate as the closer. The tension was palpable as he faced off against Alex Verdugo, a former Dodger. With a final strike, Buehler sealed the win, leaving me breathless and ecstatic. However, for Pierce, the final score held little importance; the thrill of the game itself was all that mattered.
“The players I will remember,” he said in another tweet. “The game [will] mean nothing.”
As a die-hard film enthusiast and proud Angeleno, I couldn’t help but take to social media to express my heartfelt congratulations to the Los Angeles Dodgers on their well-deserved win in the World Series. The video I shared was captured during Game 1 at Dodger Stadium over the weekend, where I joined the sea of cheering fans. Accompanying the clip, I proudly declared, “LA Dodgers: World Series Champions!
On Thursday morning, the Dodgers arrived back in town, triumphantly bearing the World Series trophy they had just won. After Los Angeles residents flooded the streets Wednesday night to celebrate their team’s eighth World Series victory, the celebrations will extend through Friday. This will include an official parade downtown, followed by a ticketed event at Dodger Stadium.
